I think it takes up too much space and it just looks silly. Is there any w get it to look like Ubuntu 8 again? I just want a bar top and bottom with same sorta functionality as they had in Ubuntu 8. If anyone can help I wou greatful because I can't find any infomation googleing the problem

What I did was follow the instructions here:

Which installs the XFCE desktop environment. It's nice and lightweight... but it's a proper desktop, not that garbage that comes with the newer versions of Ubuntu....
