• Access Attempts

From Creative1@VERT to All on Saturday, August 18, 2007 21:44:21
I re-installed windows today, and followed my usual ritual of immediately installing zonealarm followed by connecting to windows update server to get my security updates.

in the first 15 or so minutes zonealarm recorded 13 "access attempts" to my computer, checking it now i'm up to 168.

    where do these come from?

are they all actual attempts to access my computer? or is zonealarm wigging out about some harmlesse internet chatter?

If your system isn't behind another firewall, then they are likely actual attempts. Most likely, automated scripts or worms trying to propagate themselves using known (and usually fixed) Windows vulnerabilities.

wow, that's a crazy amount of malicious activity! (now up to 255 attempts).

so if I have an early release WinXP install disk (way before SP2) and it takes
me 5 or so minutes to get zonealarm up and running & my computer is connected
directly to a dsl modem (not behind any other firewall) my system was pretty
much a big FLASHING NEON SIGN ?

    humph... that sucks.

Yeah, it really does suck... honestly, if you *NEED* to connect an XP computer to the internet, then have *SOME* kind of firewall (software or hardware) before connecting to the net... I run at home behind a dedicated firewall, I've been thinking on upgrading to a newer one that supports shotgun (dual wan) connections, so I can have twl dsl accounts with some distributed bandwidth, and redundancy....

On a similar note: anyone have any good DSL ISPs? I'm going to switch mine from the phone company, they've had a lot of down days this year, and it's pissing me off...

Why don't you just look at the source rather than asking us where they
came from? You're the one with the logfiles, not us.

Well if you're behind an NAT router, you should be reasonably safe provided
no ports are forwarded or you haven't unwittingly enabled DMZ ;)
