You replied to a very old message, my systems are no longer up, If I ever get high speed internet again they will be though.. I miss running warzone and I can't do it over my dialup 9.6k cellphone connection.

BTW dovenetters, I really can't access the internet to check up on it but
what is WISP? we are supposed to be getting a transmitter, Reciever installed on GPTVs tower on the mountain for highspeed wireless.. is it quick, safe? it seems very affordable if they get around to it, otherwise I'll have to get hughesnet because I have no landline for DSL and no cable for well cable :)

hughesnet seems very expensive though but I live in a subdivision and a few people who live close said they would help with the bill if I shared internet with them.. I believe I could do that pretty safely.

Well, it's just a catchall phrash for wireless service provider. If you've ever used internet at an airport or coffee shop, you're familiar with it.

    It's that safe.

As far as hughesnet... have you looked into GE SpaceNet? Which got merged whith someone else... now at www.spacenet.com... and their residential service was dished out to retailers... so... www.starband.com

I worked with their stuff when it was just GE SpaceNet and it was good stuff with good support. Don't know if it went downhill or not, but they also supplied roof mounts and mil-spec man transportables back in the day.

The big thing about satellite is the VERY high latencies. Interactive stuff like telnet and SSH will seem much slower than what you're used to even with dial-up. You have been warned. :-)

Satellite is crappy compared to fixed wireless. I have a friend who's out in the country and can't get cable or DSL. A WISP recently put up a tower within range, and he subscribed to that. It looks like $400 to install the dish and modem, then $50/month. He's getting about 4Mbps down, 4Mbps up, and when I checked it was about 8pm. But they do say that if you become a bandwidth sponge, they will restrict your speed.

It can be done pretty easily. I used to live on a houseboat a few years back. The dock-master at the yacht basin had Hughesnet with a high gain wireless router(no encryption). Everyone had free access. Ahhh... those were the
    days... :)

Ok, this is supposed to work over a very large area though like let's say, "the tri-county area" I wish I knew the technology behind it but the people who are supposed to be providing it will not give me any info or even a date when it's supposed to be available :(

As far as hughesnet... have you looked into GE SpaceNet? Which got merged whith someone else... now at www.spacenet.com... and their residential servi was dished out to retailers... so... www.starband.com

Thanks for the info... seems this will be the only option I will have, If
they ever get it off the ground, They said they will finance the equipment
for an extra $10.00 monthly and the service is supposed to run about 30.00 to 50.00 monthly depending.. I wish they would give me mor info so I could see what I was getting into.

Yeah, myself and a couple neigbors are already connected with high gain routers to play games but none of us have broadband yet :(

Just out of curiosity, how many neighbors are involved? If it's more than one or two, have you looked into the cost of one of you getting a T1 or some other such connection, splitting the cost, and sharing it over wireless? The phone company can usually deliver a T1 to just about everywhere, but obviously the monthly costs are a bit steep. But if you're dividing it among 4-8 people, heck, it might be worth it.

As far as satellite goes, my father-in-law uses WildBlue (http://www.wildblue.com). They do have similar problems to other satellite providers in that they oversell their services, but, it's less expensive than a lot of the others I think, and they *only* provide Internet access. They don't do anything with satellite TV. So, they're pretty much dedicated to that one thing. You do have some pretty bad pingtimes and such, thanks to the laws of physics and the altitude of the satellite, but overall I'd say it's still better than dialup.

Wireless ISPs can be either really nice or really terrible. It all depends on the technology they're using (whether it's 802.11x or some other technology actually developed for fixed wireless), if they're using unlicensed or licensed frequencies, etc. So just do some research first before shelling out a bunch of cash for anything new.

We've got three hooked up right now, but at the time T1 or fiber optics is'nt an option.. we're about 10 miles away frow the closest fiber optic line hopefully sooner or later they'll get it out here.

I'd hope that they're licensed they are supposed to be mounting their equipment on a state owned tower. Yeah I'm weighing all the options before I do anything.. right now I'm content with just calling Vertruen on my
cellphone but I miss running my BBS.
