There are many low cost virtual and jailed machine leases available. Were you can run your own web solution. I provide webhosting to a number of companies (mostly ones who have done business with me for 10+ years). I charge $100 anually, for full cgi/php/perl/mysql/postgres/etc access. I don't sell the service to just anyone, so I have no drive limits bandwidth limits.

I provide this on BSD servers I have housed in several world class colo facilities.

You can lease a serverimilar with quite the configuration on any OS for
around 50$ a month. The bandwidth usage stats are only truly an issue if your streaming content to alot of people.

If you have low requirements for server side programming, googles service for domains is awesome and free. I have moved most my email service to thiers. (some customers insist I run thiers which is not as good (squirelmail sqwebmail etc))

For $7 or so a month, there are a hundred hosting options, but most will pipe ya in through a plesk app for site management.

Define strong, and low-cost? Also, what tools are you looking to have available are you wanting a vhost/shared host, virtual server, or full server?

How much (in USD) are you willing to spend a month? These pieces of info would help in making a recommendation... if you wanted to host say a bbs, you would need a virtual server, or full server, and expect to pay $80-150/month, if you want shared/vhost you can find linux hosts for as little as $60/year... so it just depends on a few things.

I know a lot of people to colocation at deru.net which is here in arizona, and iirc has two backbone connections... They're a little pricier than some, but offer much better service, and facilities than most...

There's also http://www.serverpronto.com/ which does dedicated server hosting, make sure you server and bandwidth package suit your needs... serverpronto has dedicated linux, and windows hosting.

Beyond this, there's http://discountasp.net/ which has decent service, and pricing for vhost/shared hosting. Though they're IIS based hosting, they do have PHP and mysql support, not sure on their versions for this... I don't know of any good specific linux hosts, because I usually work with .Net based websites, or companies that are hosting internal apps themselves.

If you want/need perl/cgi support, you will generally want a dedicated server like serverpronto, or full colocation like deru.net ...

I have a colocated server that I run which I could give you space on for next to nothing.

Of course I don't run PHP or MYSQL so you'd prolly not be interested :).

I'm really quite happy with Godaddy of all places. They offer either Windows or Linux servers and the cost was dirt cheap. So far I've had no issues with the service no downtimes on 4 sites I host there. I've heard others say their email service is not the best, I can't comment on that as I do not do any email from the domains I host.

I've used Page-Zone for about 5 years now, and I've been very happy with
them. www.page-zone.com. I pay $25/month, and I get like 50 Gigs of HD space, unlimited domains, and cPanel. They have lesser plans if you only
have like 1 domain or just a few.

About 6 months ago Jim ( the owner of Page-Zone) moved many of his servers
to another colo, and he had some problems along the way. This caused lots
of folks to jump ship, but his service was rock solid before and after the move it's been rock-solid since.

Presently, I'm forking out $20/month for hosting with "Lone-X", but have the advantage of being a reseller account With a Reseller account, I can put as many domain names as I want and can control useage on each individual domain name. If for eg. someone needed web space for something, they could pay $8
or so for a domain name, I could then allocate them a portion of my space to use and they'd have their own logon name, control panel, access to all the scripts, able to use as many mysql databases and php, perl, etc.... Pay more, but having the ability to just pay $8 one-time fee for a domain name every
time I get the urge to add a domain name and plop it down on my server
however I want is kinda cool....

I do the same thing through page-zone, $25/month for like 5 or 6 Gigs of storage and up to 100 domains. Just register the domain name (any
registrar), setup my two nameservers (provided by page-zone), and create
the account via my c-panel login (also provided by page-zone). LIterally seconds to get a new domain rollin' on the web :)

    It's almost too easy now'days.
