• Progress in reverse

    From Angus McLeod@VERT/ANJO to All on Friday, March 02, 2007 00:55:00
    I don't know why every "improvement" has to make things ten times worse.

    I go to download a video clip like this:

    wget http://www.example.com/clips/clip01.wmv

    You'd think when I downloaded that I'd het a video file, right? WRONG! I
    get a (short) text file that contains

    [Reference]
    Ref1=http://www.example.com/clips/clip01.wmv?MSWMExt=.asf
    Ref2=http://www.example.com:80/clips/clip01.wmv?MSWMExt=.asf

    Since these two URLs are essentially the same as the one you tried
    originally, trying to download them separately only gives you another copy
    of the same (short) file.

    Ok, I know it's because of the wonderful new 'streaming' technology that allows me to view the video right in the web-page. But I don't WANT to
    stream the file, because I don't want to have to download all 25 meg every time I want to see it!

    Grrr!

    Thank the media industry for it's DRM requirements.. the main reason is
    the site doesn't want you to have a saved copy of the file.

    Yes, I realise this. And they want me to watch the *same* Sprint advert *each* time I download a clip. This is called PROGRESS. I believe it originates in Redmond.

    Well, I can actually handle, and accept *some* DRM... iTunes' is about
    right imho.. not too restrictive, and a couple hoops if working around.

    But I have to say Software Patents are an increasingly bad idea... I think the USPTO should charge the larger fee up front for filing for a software patent, and allow for better review...
