I am really appalled these days that there are so many rude and arrogant
people on the forums. It is totally outrageous. Does anyone else feel the
same way I do here? If you do, I would love to hear your stories.

You are appalled? Where have you been, because it has ALWAYS been this
way... Even back in the 90's it was. I remember it well, flame wars
all over the place.. Probably even worse than now.. I think for the
most part that Dove-Net is actually pretty peaceful. We joke around
alot, but most of it is just that, joking...

No I think it wasn't as bad in the 90's as it is now and I am not talking
about BBS Forums. I am talking about website forums. Like for example: http://www.yourforum.com (Not a real website).

Just talking about most of the forums on the internet. Not BBS forums.

No problem. But I never have had a problem on here so there's no reason to
get all excited about it. It's too bad the names are so generally used that people can get confused. I am talking about website forums not BBS forums.

So I take it you went to a lot of internet messageboards/forums in your day?

I was station at Ft. Meade, Maryland from 92 - 94. I would stay up until 2 in the mornings (to wake up at 5) and either be online or answer qwk packets. I started with a C=64 and graduated to an Amiga 500. It was only a few years, but that marked a period of my life that I _really_ enjoyed.

Talking to and reading the posts and discussions were a way of reaching out to people. I was in the military away from home and needed an escape.

Now, I'm nostalgic about BBSing. I think it is a finer way to communicate then the blogs of today. Everybody has a blog and everybody posts to blogs. I think they serve a purpose, but they just seem cluttered.

Yeah I ran an Image BBS on the C64 back in the 1990's. That brings back a lot of memories. It was the 1st BBS software that was compatible with other computers as well Commodore. I didn't stay with the Amiga 500 long because
of the software support and I ended up selling it and getting an IBM PC compaible instead. I then ran a bbs on RemoteAccess later. I was hooked up to Fidonet too. That was so cool. :-)

The DIs did _a_lot_ of cussing. But, one day at the beginning of boot camp, they sat the entire platoon down and asked if anyone had any curse words they were opposed to. One guy said "GD." The DI asked, "What, God Damn?" The guy replied yes. We never heard those words again. It was kind of interesting that they would use every word in the book, but would not say GD.

Back in my day, they didn't ask, and wouldn't have cared if there was anyone with a problem with it. I guess the "New" military is a kinder, gentler military! :)

I remember folks being nicer in my local BBSes then most folks are here in DoveNet. I think though that was because we all got to know each other at local Modem User Group meetings and so forth. It's easier to be a turd to some anonymous user you'll never meet then to someone you might run into locally. Our Citywide BBS echo in Net 388 was very peaceful and fun... not
to say Dovenet isn't fun, but I'd have a hard time letting my kid have free run of any message forum, BBS or otherwise, now.
