I ripped all my music CDs to FLAC & MP3 (I still have my CDs) and
copied the MP3s to my phone, USB drive for my car, etc. - I didn't
want to have to buy all my music again in a downloadable format, and I figured most people were probably the same in wanting to rip their
    music CD library..

How large was/is your CD collection?

I have nearly 2000 pieces, and I've already gotten rid of a few hundred
    over the years.

Not long ago, I nearly convinced myself to settle into a CD-to-FLAC backup routine for my collection. I would *love* to have a searchable and quick visual glance of my CDs. Trying to keep my current collection organized
in some way, now that I've had 4 moves under my belt, is hard to do when
the CDs have gone into and out of boxes several times. Now I just have stacks upon stacks or boxes upon boxes.

I thought that I would only need a better pc that could act as a server
and storage. But I would also need the time. 2000 CDs would be about 2TB
of storage. Plus the cost of matching storage or backups. :(

I discovered Spotify, and the pressure is off! LOL It is much cheaper
in time and money too. I can still rummage through my CD collection to
find a gem to enjoy, but I really enjoy discovering new music that I don't already have. It's fun to find alternative versions of the originals. Sometimes the alternatives are very good - and I don't have to buy a full album to enjoy that.

I have a bit over 5,000 songs on 630 albums. In MP3 format, it's about 16-17GB, so it fits onto a 32GB USB flash drive.

It's handy to have a FLAC backup. I've kept all my CDs too because they're all legit legal purchases that I own, and I want to keep it that way.
