• History of the internet explained with maps

Although I've already heard about the history of the internet in one form or another, it always seems interesting to read about it again and see what someone else says about it - Perhaps there are more bits of information to be found. Today I found this article explaining the history of the internet with maps showing the locations of various early internet nodes: http://www.vox.com/a/internet-maps

It's interesting that the internet's roots started even before the BBS (counting Ward Christensen's CBBS in 1978, which I've heard was one of the first official BBS software packages - if not the first actual BBS package).

Thanks for the link. My first experience with internet was dialing up to a multinode wildcat bbs and then telnet out to the internet. I spent so much time on the internet I had no time for using BBS's. It was exciting to see the internet grow but now I'm back to my roots using BBS systems and enjoy being connected to others. Seems all the youngsters want to do online is post pictures of their breasts which used to be something you could only find on the "underground" lol

Wow, sometimes I forget about life before Geocities. It's really interesting to see the demographics of the internet change over the years. It looks like Scandinavia won the race to the net.
