    From Mindless Automaton@VERT/ELDRITCH to DOVE-Net.Internet on Thursday, August 01, 2013 12:54:26
It appears Comcast finally got around to shutting down inbound &
outbound port 25 in my area. (NJ) :(

While I can still send from using port 587, I cant receive email with
    port 25 blocked.

Also, I use dynamic dns and have no way to do any MX redirect to another
    port or anything.

What would be the cheapest option to work around blocked in/out port 25?

Comcast Business account is definitely not. :)

    Thanks!

I'm in a similar boat, and I use DNSExit.com. It's $25 a year for dynamic DNS and mail redirection.

DNSEXIT is my primary mail exchanger, name server and receives mail for my domain. It contacts my mail server on TCP 940 (or one of a handful of ports you can choose)

They have a DDNS client that works nicely, too. It's a simple solution that seems to work well.

That's a bummer. :( As a Comcast customer myself, I hope they don't do that in my area. But for all I know, perhaps they already have..

The answer would depend on whether mail on your system is just for
you, or if you're offering mail service to users.

Unfortunately, reading up on MX records, there's no way to specify an
alternate port... mail is always transferred to 25. So you'll have to
find a host to receive mail for you.

One thing you could do is host your BBS off site. There are a number
of virtual private servers out there for under 10 dollars a month.
    The one I'm with came with static IP's, too...one IPv4, two IPv6 (i
think -- I never pay attention to those).

If you have access to change your MX record, you could shift just the
mail processing to another system and still host your BBS locally.

I suppose the *cheapest* thing, if you don't have access to your MX
record, would be to register your own domain name, and buy some ultra
cheap web hosting. Most web hosts offer free mail hosting, although
I'm not sure about limits on number of users or anything.

Bottom line, price will be determined by the amount of hacks and
effort you're willing to put into it. Personally, with a domain that
costs me roughly ten dollars a year, and a VPS that's roughly ten
dollars a month (I got a lil extra memory just in case), it's well
worth it. I paid for my VPS by downgrading my Internet connection... :)

Well I have blocked ports too and I heard the only work around is to go ADSL but you're on your own risk if you choose to go that direction because the phone company doesn't give a damn if you get hacked or not. I guess that's what
you get for independence of privacy. System's really screwed up I think in the Internet Service Provider world. Just my own 2c.

I wholeheartedly agree with the VPS suggestion. I host my board for about $30/year on a VPS. Synchronet will happily run on a 128MB VPS with DOSEmu, DOS doors and multiple concurrent nodes. I recommend www.lowendbox.com as a starting point.

Don't forget that a remote box makes a good SSH proxy for when you want to get out past your local network unmonitored. :)

Just because your network admin cannot see the exact details of the trafic does not mean that he will not find it suspicious.
