I wasn't aware of this, did some googling when I realized I'd run over my cap this month. if you downloaded Lubuntu 12 via BitTorrent this month, well, you're welcome. :)

My router said I was at 261GB, I went to check out Comcast's bandwidth meter and saw a note saying that the bandwidth cap has been suspended.

    http://news.cnet.com/8301-1023_3-57436489-93/comcast-ditches-250gb-data-cap-tes ts-tiered-pricing

Comcast, the largest cable TV and Internet broadband provider in the U.S., is changing its data cap policy on its broadband service to encourage its customers to use its service without worrying about how much data they are consuming.

Today, the company announced in a blog post that it will soon begin testing a new pricing model for customers who use an "excessive" amount of data each month. In these markets, the company will increase the cap, which is now 250GB per month, to 300GB per month. And when customers exceed this cap, the company will charge an extra $10 for every 50GB of data that a user uses each month.

Meanwhile, the company said it will suspend the 250GB cap in all other parts of the country while the test is under way.

overall this isnt good news. there shouldnt really be caps.

No, in a perfect consumer's world there wouldn't, but tiered pay-by-the-gigabyte pricing is almost an inevitability.

not in my freaking world it isnt. with the increased use of streaming content they shouldnt section us all off into tiered plans. it's failed with roadrunner. you just have to say NO and perhaps change your provider to get your point across.

we pay more for LESS in america than any other major country on his planet.
we cant let them screw us in the behind.

Totally. You know why this is the case? It's all those peering agreements that are in place between major providers. They charge each other for the bandwidth (which really shouldn't be that expensive... they could cut their costs down to 10-15% and still pay the electric bills and colocation costs on all that routing equipment), then trickle all of that cost down, so even big ISPs feel it. It does suck. What is even worse is that Cogent is behind a lot of this gouging. Eff them.

Yeah, ISP's are getting really raunchy with their ISP service, much like the
Cellular companies. They'll eventually feel the push and be forced to do like the Cellular companies and go back to earning their money! When the internet first came to the home market everyone claimed "Unlimited Internet!" Then cellular plans started claiming Unlimited Data.... Then their Unlimited Data started having more and more Limits. AT&T recently discovered their limits caused it to be cheaper for my girlfriend and I to leave them. We've got an awesome plan on Cspire that I'd love to see an internet provider start doing and pushing the others to doing! We get unlimited data and text, but the only clause is that "Streaming" they allow you to have unlimited audio streaming, but video streaming is limited to 30 mins / month. I do have issues with this, as I don't see how you can call streaming not 'data'. Data defines any form of internet use, it'd seem like someone could get them on that... But not complaining, because despite their limited voice plans, I can launch Skype and pay $2.99/month and make unlimited skype calls via their DATA plan! So for $100 a month, I get 2 phone lines with 1000 minutes shared between the two and unlimited text and data and audio streaming, $2.99 more and I can effectively talk to anyone any time as much as I want... I'd love to catch an ISP advertising Unlimited internet again.... Then nail them for using the word unlimited with their conditions (unless they are truely unlimited, in which case, I'd have to switch to them!) Every one I see has bandwidth limits, and charge you extra if you exceed the bandwidth. I also have a hard time with bandwidth metering. How am I to know their info is accurate?

Was going to say, if he has a decent cell phone plan, maybe he should transfer any files via cell phone data.... I used bit torrent on my android phone to download some android games, but used ot use it for playing arcade game emulators on my android, and would download things to use on my desktop, then transfer via memory card to the desktop.... Keeps the others in the house from complaining that your bogging down the internet, and you don't exceed your limit for the house.... Unless your limited worse on your cellular...
