I only use FB but I could get by without it. I am getting back to the bbs scene. IMHO FB is getting too commercialized. but to answer your question
I would use BBS's and some file sharing progs that have chatrooms,WINMX
    was my favorite.

Let's say for argument sake Facebook and Twitter went officially down permanently. What do you think would replace them with?

Google Plus. It wouldn't be the same, though.

    Hi,

Let's say for argument sake Facebook and Twitter went officially down permanently. What do you think would replace them with?

If either went down the other would probably have a capacity issue!

As such it is highly likely that they both go down at once :-)

People are not using Messengers as much as they used to hence the popularity
is decreasing. Eventually Facebook and Twitter will face that direction eventually.

Hm, I would consider that a different question as to what would replace FB and Twitter (I don't see either of them revolutionary--Twitter == BBS wall, FB = BBS messages, finger, etc, on a much grander scale).

I think there will always be "two big ones": one personal users stick to, and one for business. You can see this happening with FaceBook vs LinkedIn. My opinion is that Twitter type sites are going to die out in the next few years. This is based on what I see at my work role which focuses around these sites and technologies.

I wouldn't say this in my line of work, but Twitter is for people who need to think they're heard, even if they have nothing to say. It's much more difficult to have a FB and Twitter accounts, and NOT post anything, than it is to become one of those people who post "I'm at KFC, Waterloo" type status updates (personally, I despise seeing updates like this).

I am as guilty as the next person of posting meaningless updates. I try not to, but it happens. I'm seeing a trend of less and less valuable communications coming via Facebook and Twitter: does anyone else feel the same way? I would be interested in exploring this degradation if anyone also works in this industry.

As for the "next big thing". I believe it will be a new social network phenomenon called "SyncHack". It will replace FaceBook, Google+, Twitter and Linked In because it will be labelled a "turnkey, best-of-breed enterprise 2.0 solution".

    :)

    Kind regards,

Actually I don't see any real discussions on Facebook at all. I see a lot of adds and political stuff and I see a lot of people who are not really computer folks who otherwise probably wouldn't be using those kinds of services if they weren't so easy and popular. I'm not trying to say computer people are better than anyone else but I didn't see these same types of people (my friends) using BBSs when I was long ago and certainly weren't interested in such things prior to computing popularity explosions. Facebook as you pointed out is a nice face on what is otherwise an old idea that has been around for a long time. On Facebook I see a lot of is pictures of their children or bumper sticker type pictures and little comments on those. No real content or discussions, nothing like the potential it could have to really bring large groups of people together and possible innovate or solve issues. I think one part of the problem is the actual friend request and stigmata associated with the friends thing. Friends and the amount of a persons friends is similar to societal status symbol or a class type system. So if all your friends abandon you based on the content you provide this causes the fear of real content or discussion for want of agreement or likability.

I've never felt a need for popularity on a BBS and it certainly wasn't on display for everyone to see: person X has 4000 friends therefore they must be important and worthy of my ear or attention.

    Cool, thank you sir. :)

It is (at this point) the only multinode nethack/roguelike BBS. Nethack and rogues/crawlers were definitely a large part of its inspiration.
