I my first flight today went very well, with the engine seemingly running
much better than before. Also, I was gaining better control and actually starting to enjoy the aircraft instead of flying with my teeth clenched.
I ran it out of fuel to get an idea how long a tankful would last, and
screwed up the landing, so I went down in the middle of a clump of wind tamarinds, but found a thick, soft patch of grass and suffered no dammage
    at all.

The second flight went even better. I did some b-i-g loops, some 2- and 3-turn rolls, a couple hammer-heads, even some inverted flight. Some
lowish fast passes (not too close yet as I still didn't feel 100% on the aircraft) and was generally having a ball.

Then I made a turn downwind.....

Meantime, Rudy was having fun with his Acrowot. This aircraft was
actually given it's first flight on the same day as the Seabee, so you
might say they were brothers. The Acrowot has a strong, foam wing with a thick section, and obeche veneer. On top of this, Rudy nad applied
half-ounce glass with epoxy, then painted, then another coat of epoxy on
the top. He'd been having problems with his OS 70 earlier, but he'd got
that sorted and was hurling the Acrowot around and having fun!

Then he made a turn upwind.....

Ouch. You need some kind of air traffic control. Sorry to see that one
go, I was looking forward to more stories of how F-A-S-T she was. :)

Me too. I was really starting to get excited about it, as I began to get
the feel for the flight characteristics, and get the preliminary glitches ironed out. <sigh>

I was looking forward to more stories of how F-A-S-T she was. :)

Well, she hit the ground very F-A-S-T indeed.....

    Oh no!

I was half-waiting for a post of this sort, but I didn't expect it to be a mid-air collision. I bet *that* doesn't happen very often!?!

    What a bummer. :-(

Ah! Such confidence! :-) Actually, early in the life of a model it is
in some danger from unfamiliarity of the pilot.

but I didn't expect it to be a mid-air collision.

    Nor did I!

I bet *that* doesn't happen very often!?!

Well, I've seen -- and participated in -- a few at the cliff, not even counting deliberate Zagi-bash-fests. But I don't ever remember seeing one between powered models....

    What a bummer. :-(

Tell me! Actually, I don't feel *bad* about it. If I'd tip-stalled on landing or lost orientation and put it in, or got into a spin and couldn't
get it out again, I'd be *kicking* myself. But under the circumstances, nobody was to blame and it's just "one of those things."

Of course, I'm not happy about being grounded again....

    You mean Sam/Rudy?

Well, that wing of his had a couple of chunks out of it, and the impact
broke his engine mount so badly the engine was hanging off the front of
the fuselage by the fuel-lines as he tried to land, but the wing can be repaired easily enough, and he has another engine mount, so he'll probably
    be flying again tomorrow....

Actually, he feels pretty bad about it, and he even offered to build me a
new aeroplane. And Norman called yesterday and offered to give me an old
(but great-flying) aeroplane of his. But I can't expect Rudy to do that, because he is no more responsible for hitting my aeroplane than I am for hitting his. And Norm wasn't even *there*.

    You mean Sam/Rudy?

    Yeah, that's who I meant. :-)

This morning I had a look at the pile of wreckage, and I realised
something: The main undercarriage, including booties and wheels, just
aren't anywhere to be seen. No undercarriage here:

    http://www.anjo.com/rc/aircraft/seabee/seabee.crash2.jpg

so I can only conclude they came off in the air. It was a fairly severe impact in the air. Two points of damage on Rudy's wing, and the entire
cowl and engine mount smashed. On mine there was major disintegration of
the front, but that was when she hit the ground nose first. But there was also damage along one side, the tailwheel had been hit pretty hard, and
now the main wheels off. Not to mention the Rx antenna wire cut or
'popped', near the tail, and the outboard part of the antenna vanished.
Not to mention the piece chiopped off the starboard wing and lost in the bush...

I hope we can find the U/C leaf, boots, and wheels.

You have use for these parts on another plane?

Not immediately, but if I ever decide to scratch-build some sort of
machine, the gear might prove useful. The wheels I was using on the
Seabee for example, were not the wheels that came with it. It was
supplied with a lightweight foam-tyre type of wheel. I replaced these
with treaded, balloon tyres that I had here from a previous wreck. They
were a little heavier, but would have stood up better to the wear amd tear
    of many takeoffs and landing.

Of course, this now won't be an issue... :-(

I suspect if you wandered around the perimeter of the club house and strip with a metal detector you would find *all kinds* of extra parts! :-)

I wandered into the cane piece once, in search of the Zagi, and found a spinner... That was back at the other club, when I was learning to fly
with the Zagi on a bungee....
