    I'm very very upset.

I've been eagerly waiting for a new electric/acoustic to be delivered for the last few weeks so the Woman can practice while I'm mirroring her and we can both hear what she's doing (especially when I'm playing the 12-string, which just completely over-powers the 6 in volume even when picked gently), and it finally arrived today...

...suffering a near-fatal wound from an impact that gouged the end of the headstock and cracked the neck clean-through under the fretboard from the 1st to 4th or 5th fret.

I hate the way UPS handles its packages. I can't imagine why a company would choose to standardize sending fragile items via them, insurance or not. They're just brutal with the packages they deliver, and you'd be just begging for all kinds of customer dissatisfaction because of damages due to delivery. *shrug*

The guitar could have been packed in a more batter-resistent manner, too. If the gouge/crack didn't make the issue irrelevent, I'd be bitching up a storm about the abrasions up and down the body that'd take at least an hour to properly polish out.

*sigh* Sucks, too, because it sounds fantastic, even with the neck messed-up. Cracked or not, the truss-adjustment kept it pretty true. I doubt many people could hear the effect on the tuning, but it grates on my nerves a little as I play up and down the fret-board. There's definitely a slight twist in it that blows-out the high-e tuning up around the 8th fret, as far as I'm concerned, but my father insists he can barely hear.

Dammit dammit dammit dammit dammit. This means it'll be weeks before the issue's resolved and I have the new acoustic/electric I've been wanting so badly lately.

lol I suppose I shouldn't be getting so aggravated by it. It's not like there's a shortage of guitars in the house or anything.

*sniff* But it's a cutaway.... All black... And it sounds SO nice...

From the sound of it, sounds like it came from Musician's Friend...

    Their packing procedure:

    1. Find a really big thin-walled box
    2. drop product into box
    3. insert short length of paper snake, as to fit loosely on top of product
    4. close box and tape
    5. throw box in the general direction of UPS truck

No... I can't recall their name off the top of my head, but I'm reasonably sure that wasn't it. I'll double check. Noted, though.

It was packed a LITTLE better than that. The box was well-sized, there were (too thin) styrofoam inserts and a few cardboard pieces to help the box keep its weight, it was facked in a foam sleeve, and even the strings were slack-tuned the way I'd expect them to be and wrapped in another piece of foam.

It could have been better, though, and I honestly don't know what they were thinking using UPS. I mean, it doesn't REALLY make a difference with UPS, but they could have at least thrown a FRAGILE sticker on it somewhere.

But UPS GROUND? I was expecting FedEx or, at the least, the USPS, both of which are actually usually very good at maintaining the integrity of their packages.

I could really do without the anxiety of the whole buying a guitar off the net deal at this point. I've sent 2 emails to the seller now with no response.

I mean, I can always report the damage to UPS myself, start their return procedures and their automatic sender-notification, then reverse the charges from my bank account to Paypal, then notify Paypal of WHY, etc etc etc...

But it's such a friggin' hassle. Wish the seller would just respond so I don't have to embarass him on every level of his ebay storefront's business mechanism. It's not like I can just say, "Oh, well" and forget about the expense, you know?

Oh, for the record... The eBay storefront is Off Hour Rockers. They have a very high positive feedback rating - 1280+ positive, 3 mutually-retracted negatives. I'm actually wondering if they're even seeing the emails I'm sending or if it'll take a negative feedback to get their attention, get it resolved, and then mutually-retract like the other 3.

I've bought drums, cymbals, hardware, guitars, and mics from them... Fortunately I have been lucky in that everything was undamaged.

The packaging was terrible though. On my last order, IIRC, I bought a cymbal, a stand, 5 or 6 mics, cables, a patch bay, and a preamp. It all shipped in a large, thinwalled cardboard box: Cymbal on the bottom, with everything else thrown in on top of it, and no packing filler whatsoever. The box had ripped apart at the seams and the mic cables were spilling out. I'm amazed that they were all still there.

ummm... yeah! The keyboard did it.

Back in the early 90's, I used to be a regular on LambdaMOO (telnet to lambda.moo.mud.org:8888 and see if it's still around) and I remember having a feature object on my character that, among other things, would emote to the room:

    Daemon executes his typist.

Just reminded me of that for some reason.

I think my character was over 11 years old when I forgot to login to reset the 6 month inactivity timer and was reaped.

Ouch. That's why I rarely play online games anymore, while I used to play a dozen or so games of Falcon's Eye simultaneously. My strategy tends to rely very heavily on long-term diplomacies, and getting reset over and over again for inactivity renders my entire style of play impotent.

Well, it wasn't really a game, exactly... It was a MUD, except without the RPG part... It was just more of a text-based-virtual-reality thing for person-to-person interaction. The neat thing about it was its extensibility. The 'OO' in MOO stood for 'Object-oriented'. You could write your own objects to perform certain tasks or interact with the virtual environment. I wrote a few things... a wind-up toy in my likeness, a pet cat, etc... Of course, there was an incredible library of objects written by others that you could use, also. And on top of that, the virtual world was HUGE.

If you're bored, it's (was?) a lot of fun.

I run a MOO, accessible as a door from my board, which is based on the same core as Lambda... It's been over a year since I played with it, though. No time.

An in case my wife is watching, we're talking about *airplane* models here.. (or "aeroplane models" as Angus likes to call them).

I prefer to say "aircraft" or "aeroplane".

"Air" is a common english word describing the fluid that surrounds us, and likewise "craft" is another common english word describing a vessel of
some sort, so by combining those two words, we arrive at "aircraft", a
vessel that travels in or through the air.

"Aero" is a classical greek word also describing the fluid that surrounds
us, and "plane" is another word from antiquities describing a flat
surface. The term "aeroplane" originally used to describe the flat
surfaces (wings) that caught the air and supported the machine. Hence
    also "mono-plane", "bi-plane", "tri-plane", etcetera.

It really doesn't matter either way, but I prefer to use the
english/english "aircraft" or the antique/antique "aeroplane", and use
    them interchangeably.

By the way, there is also an interesting "aerodrome" meaning the same
thing as "airport" but the last person I heard use that word was Biggles!

</everything you never wanted to know...>
