• Found a Propeller

While digging through a room behind my house, I ran across a 21" model airplane propeller. It's made by Prince Aircraft. I have no idea what it's value may be. Perhaps if it would be of use to you, make me an offer. :-)

Prince usually don't make props for model aircraft AFAIK, but I can't
think of anything else that would spin a 21" prop.

According to their website, the price for a 21" prop would be in the order
of $170 plus shipping, so if it's in good nick I'd flog it on eBay or something. For model use a 20"-22" prop would probably cost $15-$30
depending on profile, for glass-filled nylon, $18-$24 and for wood.

If you want it, I'll send you a picture, so you can be SURE you want it. I'll let you have it for the low end of your prices there... If you'll pay shipping. :-D

    uh... are those US $'s?

    You want?

Actually, no. :-) I don't have anything that will spin 21" of prop. A friend is now assembling a Christian Eagle

    http://www.greatplanes.com/airplanes/gpma1217.html

powered by a Fuji 50cc engine that will require 20-22" of prop, but he
already has acquired the props he needs.

So, how big would the plane be to require a 21" prop?

So, how big would the plane be to require a 21" prop?

The size of prop is usually determined by the horsepower and torque
generated by the engine. 4-stroke motors generate more torque at lower
RPM for their size than an equivilent sized 2-stroke, which will generate
more power at higher RPM. The higher the torque the more diameter and the more pitch you can use.

My Thunder Tiger .46 2-stroke generates 1.43 horses at 17,000 RPM and
spins an 11x6 prop whereas my .80 4-stroke spins a 14x6 prop at only
    11,000 RPM.

A large prop would be for a quarter-scale job like Colin's Extra-300S (19" carbon-fibre) or Ian's new Christian Eagle (which he just called me and
asked me to visit this evening to help him start for the first time!) that will be using either a 20" or 22" prop -- I can't remember what he said.

One of the problems with scale R/C models is the difficulty in spinning a scale prop. For instance, the Top Flite Sea-Fury (a beautiful aircraft)
    calls for a 1.20 4-stroke at most. The Magnum 1.20 spins a 16" two-blade
prop max. But a scale prop for the Sea Fury would be 22.5" in diameter
    and have *five* blades.

    http://www.top-flite.com/airplanes/topa0155.html

For each extra blade you should reduce the diameter by an inch, so the
biggest 5-blade prop a 1.20 should be asked to spin (assuming you could
find suitable a 5-blade prop in the first place) would be only 13" in diameter.

The problem is the RPM. At the type of RPM that model engines run to
produce the power, large props are not efficient. A reduction gearbox
would help, but that increases cost and weight and would require the front
end of the model be redesigned to make space for it...

I realize this is an old post but I thought it interesting. The Moni motorglider spins a 21 inch prop. This is a real aircraft and was designed by John Monette who is now at Sonex building sport aircraft.

Hope that clears up what the prop actually was...

Also it was installed on a 25HP 2 stroke engine... He He... I have pictures of my motorglider if you want to see what they look like.

Sure do! We fly model aircraft, and we frequently discuss the idea of building a microlight, but i) everybody is chicken, and ii) I think it's actually illegal here...

Where are you located? You probably could build an ultralight. They are legal almost everywhere.

Pictures of my plane are at http://www.isptoolz.com/506t/

    I actually just sold it.

    Where are you located?

    In the caribbean.

You probably could build an ultralight. They are legal almost
    everywhere.

I was told there is a restriction on flying them within a 25 mile radius
of an international airport. Since my *entire*country* is within 25 miles
of just such an international airport.....

Pictures of my plane are at http://www.isptoolz.com/506t/

At first glance I thought it was an early BD5 with the V-tail!

That's really cool. We sit around from time to time at our club and talk about ultra-lights or micro-lights and the possibility of building one.
Then the talk gets around to *who* is dumb enough to be persuaded to *fly*
    the thing..... :-)

    I actually just sold it.
