Just thought I would throw out a couple of questions. Do you own a drone? If so, what do you use it for and how often? I have a DJI Phantom 3 Standard. I have used it only a handful of times on vacation when we rent a place. I have gotten really nice areal videos. It was fun to operate and still is but sadly I don't get that much time with it and of course, weather has to be good.

What are your experiences?

I've only played with a cheap drone. It took OK video, but had some control issues that could render it unusable at times. Hoping one day to get a better drone one day. But drones do have a lot of cool uses, when in the right hands.

I've considered buying a drone. I have 5 acres of my own land, plus80 acres
of farmland behind it and 40 in front I have permission from the neighbors to walk/ hunt on. The major airports are over 20 miles away, and even the
smaller private fields are more than 8 miles. While I have space or access
to it, I'm at the point I have enough hobbies. I wish these were around when
I was younger.

i got a drone for christmas. i think there was something wrong with it.
i pushed the button to hover it and it would always go off to the side. couldnt calibrate it.

anyways, i threw it out. the end.

Yes, that is part of the struggle is to find a place to fly. I have downloaded the Android App "AirMap" to help me with where to fly. And from where I stand there are so many overlapping Controlled Air Spaces that I basically can't fly anywhere near where my house is. :( So, that makes it a bit difficult. So, I understand your pain! :)

Actually, airspace is the easy part. There is airspace here, and the apps are great at finding free airspace. It's the parks authorities that are the biggest pain. They manage land all around here, and their website is not mobile friendly. They don't have an app or seem to link to any drone apps that I know of, so unless one is really careful, it would be easy to get a $3k fine. :/

My grandmother's farm was 160 acres. 100 was farm and the other 60 was
wooded or reclaimed to forest. I loved going camping out there as well as hunting. There were spots where we could shoot our rifles out to 500 yards. The local clubs and ranges were usually limited to 200 yards. Shooting out
to 200 is not that hard but after 350 yards factors such as trajectory need
to be factored in.

For a couple of years back in the 1980's some selct cut lumber was harvested, and the loggers left some trails that we continued to maintain through the woods. I'm sure flying a drone via a camera feed would've been fun along
those trails.

I did try a 5 WPM CW exam before the FCC got rid of it, and failed it.
Had I filled in the blanks, I might have passed it...but, it's a moot
point now.

One local ham (who became a Silent Key long ago from a heart attack),
and his wife (she was licensed as well, and has since remarried), were
great friends. I asked him what his secret was to learning CW, and he
said "I learned all the dirty words first" (hi hi). I laughed, and said,
"Well, you can't say them on the air, but if it helps, more power to you".

One night, a club out of Dallas, was doing a CW course on the local
repeater (I copied them off of Echolink), and the first letters they
taught formed the S expletive (hi hi). I thought "I'll be damned!!".
But, when you looked at the dot and dash pattern, it made perfect sense.

However, the funniest story I heard (I might have shared this before,
but don't remember) about CW went like this.

Four guys were at a restaurant table in Annapolis, Maryland...telling
each other dirty jokes in CW. This drop dead, gorgeous, curvaceous,
female walked over to them, and sternly admonished them...saying "You
boys need to watch your language. I teach CW at the Naval Academy
across the street", and walked out!! They were as red as tomatoes...
and that's a true story!! (hi hi).

Yet now, folks are learning CW because they WANT to, and NOT because
they HAVE to...and they're discovering that CW is fun!!

Yeah, 500 yards, nice for a shooting range. Definitely a good place to work on your aim and technique. I haven't been shooting for over 40 years myself, it just became too hard, with the townies moving out to the bush. I have toyed with the idea of going to a local gun club when they have open days, but timing hasn't worked out so far. Not that I have time for a new sport or hobby anyway! :D Or money for that matter - I'm transitioning into a more expensive phase on the track, where training and travel expenses start to mount, but that's all good. :)

Yeah, some nice footage could be had from a drone in places like that. Only way that would be doable here would be on private land, since public land of that type generally comes under Parks, and as I've said in previous messages, that's no go for flying.

That's the same thing with ham radio traffic nets...too many nets,
and too little time.

Back in 2006, I started a page on Echolink Nets...but several months
ago, in noting that the nets page at dstarinfo.com had quite a bit of
outdated info, I started a list of D-Star and D-Rats Nets...to go with
the Echolink Nets. Then, I added links to CQ100, DMR, D-Star HF,
Hamsphere, and recently discovered "Christian Nets".

The list is about evenly split between D-Star and Echolink Nets,
with a few D-Rats nets for good measure. You can get a copy of it at https://www.theweatherwonder.com/elk.htm -- it's the first entry on
the page. There are nearly 150 nets in that file...if that doesn't
satisfy these "net hoppers", nothing will.

It got to be such a mad rush on checkins, that I'm on the air only
for nets that I run, and a few selected other nets. If I can't run a
net due to weather, internet, or health issues, I try to get someone
else to take Net Control. But, for the others, if I don't feel like
checking into them, I don't...and I don't lose any sleep over it.

I didn't know they allow one to fly a drone at events like that. Interesting... I thought about doing that but I thought people would be upset at me for doing so. Plus, the people holding the event, I thought would not be happy about it either.

No one complained, but we are very VERY rural - not in a "city" at all.
I think it would be frowned upon in any sort of 'big time' setting.

I've been playing around with a Mavic Mini and doing a lot of reading, especially the rules around what is considered "hobby" versus "commercial".

Be careful flying around groups, even with permission. Read up on the
FAA Part 107 rules and the commercial license requirements and what you
can do with it.

Flying is a blast but there are jerks that will try to tell you that you
are breaking the law. The best defense is to be informed!
