• paint or glue?

From Lady Wolfstorm@VERT/TIME to All on Saturday, December 04, 2004 14:05:00
About 15 years ago I was introduced to building models with the help of my dad, and in the last year I recently took up that hobby again. I started out small with an all-metal Dukes of Hazzard car that didn't require paint or glue and am now on models that require both.

My question is, is it better to glue and then paint, or paint and then glue?

I have put together a "General Lee", the Mystery Machine from Scooby Doo, the Delorean from "Back to the Future", and the Ecto-1 from Ghostbusters... I have in my inventory the A-TEam van, Jetson-mobile, the Batmobile, and a couple Knight Rider (the black Transam). I am wanting to get "experienced" before I tackle the Knight Rider model.

    Thanks.

It probably does not apply in your case since it doesn't look like you
build the same types of model, but there was a ercent incident in England
    that may be of interest.

A model aircraft went out of control, and struck a 14-year old girl,
killing her instantly. Analysis showed that the tail-parts had been
painted and *then* glued into place. This resulted in the constructor
gluing paint to paint, which gave a weak joint and the tail came off,
    causing the loss of control.

Ok, so your models aren't the same, but the caution still holds: If you
paint first, you have to take care that the paint doesn't affect any subsequent assembly of parts -- with glue or otherwise.

I suspect that it might be easier in some cases to get a better finish by painting first and then assembling after. Just be careful and be aware of
    the possibility.

I dunno. It's been years since I've built models, but I do recall that most model glue will strip paint if applied on top of it. I would suggest gluing and then painting for most pieces.

WHen I was a kid, and built model cars, I would paint the parts first, then scrape off the paint in the area where the glue had to adhere. IIRC, that glue worked by plasticizing the part and then evaporating and solidifying, effectively welding the plastic together. Wouldn't work on paint.
