    Hey Folks!

I have been thinking of getting into this hobby. I have flown fixed and collective pitch helicopters, and was kinda getting the hang of it till my wallet ran dry.

Any suggestions on brands etc? I was thinking around 300-450 U.S. cost. I would like the ability to take reasonable quality video eventually with it.

Any suggestions or feedback greatly appreciated.

I've had really good luck with the WLToys models. You can get them (much cheaper than $300) at banggood.com.

You can see some of my quad-copter videos on my youtube channel, e.g.: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5F4DymMARdA

    I haven't resolved the jello-effect yet.

Thanks Man, I will check into that. I'm not sure I've heard of WLToys, but then again, I'm new at it. :-)

For 300-450 you can can build your own quad, camera and all, I have a great 450 sized quad that I run a Mobius cam on with a video downlink, I use Multuwii pro as the flight controller with 4x 30 amp esc, and 4x 800kv motors, got the frame on Amazon for 15 dollars and and the motors, batteries, esc, all on Hobbyking and have around $300.00 sunk into all of it. placed rubber dampeners on the mobius to kill the jello effect. still cannot use mobius or go-pro for true FPV because of the latency, but it helps. I'd rather fly LOS anyway. if you need any help or a parts list or anything, feel free to ask. First day back in the BBS world in about 10 years and realize that DoveNet has many quality message boards for the hobbies I'm now into :)

Thanks for this Tim. I appreciate the offer of help. I have not bought anything yet, and I'm stll looking on-line. There are very few hobby shops where I live, and the choices are slim-pickings at best. I have a friend who spent 1800.00 dollars on his and the resulting video is fantastic, don't expect much for 400-500 but we'll see :-)

    Welcome back to the Boards.

Really, you can expect a lot for that price if you are willing to build your own. usually, the 1800.00 ones are ready to fly units and you're really paying someone else to build it. I've had both, and really enjoy having one I've built myself (price being one thing), but if an issue arises, it is very easy to bugfix, I'm really amazed at how the price for this technology has went down while the quality and innovation is still rising.

    Thanks for the warm welcome.

The rules are still relaxed here in Canada. Privacy issues are the most discussed, and a little common sense would go a long way in this regard. hmmm... guess we'll see. Stay away from condo bedroom windows, and the airspace around the White House, and we'll be ok. LOL :-)

I would'nt worry too much about that here in the us. people are doing some idiotic stuff, but there are already proposed rules out there for hobbyist which are almost the same as what we have now. I multirotors are here to stay and truthfully there is not much that can be done by the government but to embrace the technology. they are already permitting commercial use, hobby use will not be overly restricted, just use common sense and there will be no issues, a membership with the ama would'nt hurt either.

there's a lot of illegal possibilities. drug dealing, you could fix one with an IR camera and see what houses are unoccupied so you can rob them. just casing out businesses with drones would work great.

I'd be afraid Obama would send their much bigger drones after my little drone. Hmmm, sounds like drone envy to me.
