I have been looking into getting a model rc helicopter for some time and strangely enough I got one for Christmas :)
I was given a T-40 (T640C), Its a Co-Axel and runs on a 2.4ghz radio system.

I've dabbled in RC helis as well. I just got a few WLToys V262 Quad-copters (as gifts, and for myself) from banggood.com and they are *very* easy to
fly and pretty resilient: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uEHVxX67zlA
Very fun. I ordered the camera (VGA), bubble blower, and missle launchers for them too, but they haven't come in yet.

that quadcopter and all the accessories are cheaper than i expected.
have been a wasted $20, but the idea of HD arial photography is intriguing to me. Some of the examples on youtube are mind-boggling: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xm2saUt4wR8

Yeah, very reasonable and very fun (so far). I think I'm going to get the Mobius (HD) camera soon after the cheap VGA camera arives, so that might have been a wasted $20, but the idea of HD arial photography is intriguing to me.

Heh. We work with aerial photos all the time. The guys would love to
have something like this for shots during field work. :)
Not sure the boss would go for it though.

if i were you i'd get a throwaway smart phone with a decent camera and then use an app to do timed photos.
wow that video is pretty amazing.

i'd like to get one with the water cannon for harrassing my ex gf sinceO.k. this brings so many thoughts to mind!
she only lives 2 blocks away from me. and the camera to record the
attacks. :D would make for some funny youtube videos.
4. O.k. now I'm just getting expensive... Spray gasoline during the hot part of the day all over her lawn. Imagine as she tries to grow a pretty yard, she gets frustrated because grass won't grow anywhere!
don't turn when I turn up the throttle). I know the helicopter has power because the light inside it comes on. Just in case, I tried charging the battery a little bit without the power timer, but it still won't respond to the remote control. I'm not sure what might be wrong with it.

sounds like it no workey and you should return it.

It did work at one point though. Not sure what happened.
Speaking of RC helicopters, I just bought one for myself a few weeks ago, thinking it would be fun to play around with one. The one I got is the Yiboo Dragon 807: http://www.ujtoys.com/UJ807-RC-Helicopter-Red-p/uj807-r.htm
The manual that came with it mentioned that the battery should not be charged longer than 3 hours. So I recently bought a wall power timer so that I could set it to charge the helicopter for just a few hours overnight or while I'm at work, etc.. After using the wall timer one day, the helicopter is not responding to the remote control (i.e., the propellers don't turn when I turn up the throttle). I know the helicopter has power because the light inside it comes on. Is it one of the new 2.4GHz style where the channel is auto-negotiated when you turn on the craft and the controller? My new quadcopter is like that
and sometimes it takes a while for them to "sync-up" (and agree on a channel/frequency). I sometimes have to turn my controller off and on again or play with the controls a little bit to get it to sync-up. The lights on my copter change their blink rate when it's successfully synced to a controller.

Here's my first POV video with this setup: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mAgnIh1zsBY
I'll make a lot better video on a less-windy day.

I watched some show on TV (I think it was about digging for gold or something) where the camera crew setup a copter with an HD camera on it. Then took it over a waterfall and recorded a bunch of REALLY cool arial shots of it, whereas those wouldn't have happened from any kind of regular camera man. Excellent stuff. You can definitely get good angles that wouldn't be fathomable any other way.

Dude, you gotta do something with that lawn.
Then again, you have kids so I
can see where the lack of motivation to do so would come from, as they'd just mess it up again afterwards. :)
Cool video, though. Is it hard to fly? I thought I saw it crash a couple times..

Yeah, I have over an acre of grass, we haven't had much rain in long
time, and my water bills have approximately doubled, so I'm cutting
back and thus, the grass suffers. Cie la vie.

It's the drought (and lack of cutting and weeding) that really have
taken their toll on the yard. The kids mostly just leave their toys
and clothes/shoes (and cell phone!) outside to get sprinklered on and generally don't take care for stuff. :-)
Cool video, though. Is it hard to fly? I thought I saw it crash a

It's generally surprisingly easy to fly, but there was a breeze which basically turns the copter into a somewhat-remotely-controlled kite.
Yeah, I put her down on accident a few times, but no damage. She's
very tough.
I want to get a better camera and iso-mount it to avoid the "jelly
effect" and make some better vids. We'll see.

Maybe even some astroturf. Damn. Now that I mentioned it it sounds like an awesome idea. Never have to do yardwork again!

How much does something like that run? And do you have a link to a picture of the actual unit?
