On my Win98SE machine, Doskey is installed and initialized with a macro
file in autoexec.bat. Then I don't need to worry about it anymore.
Whenever I open a MS-DOS prompt window, it is fully active.

Is there a way to do likewise with WinXP? I miss those macros, but not always enough to initialize Doskey every time a Command Prompt window
    is opened.

The normal command prompt on Windows XP is a 32-bit shell (cmd.exe), *not* "a MS-DOS prompt" window. The doskey functionality is built into cmd.exe. You may need to enable some options using environment variables but you shouldn't need to run/install/initialize anything. Run "cmd /?" at a command prompt for some help. If you were more specific about which "macros" you miss, then we could help you further.
