Why can't they make a tablet to last 16 hrs of battery power before
recharging? Is it even possible? We're living in 2019 now. The technology should be there. It would be great innovation.

I don't know what you are talking about. The last 3 tablets (about 7" tablets) have all had battery lifes > 16 hours.

I plug it in when I go to sleep, unplug it when I get up and use it all day (say 6am-10pm). At 10pm, when I plug it back in, the battery is still at about 40%.

It probably depends on which tablet is being used and what you are doing on said tablet. I would assume different tablets have different size batteries. I have an iPad at work and it only lasts about 8 hours before it dies, if I don't plug it in. But I'm using it constantly and it's sending/receiving 4G data every 15 seconds.

Perhaps you could buy a bigger battery if you want it to last 16 hours. People want small sleek tablets, phones, etc. The battery is already the biggest and heaviest component as it is. I don't want to lug around a heavy phone or a tablet that weighs as much as a laptop. It's easier to carry a charging cable and charge it as needed.

A BBS is a server. If the BBS/server is really expected to attract and retain users, then it'll need to be reliably connected to the Internet (e.g. no WiFi) and have long up-times. A tablet does not make a good server for several reasons. Haven't we already had this discussion?

If you mean just mobile around your house, that would probably be fine. But if you're running a BBS on a tablet that you take without you outside the house and various places, it may be hard for people to connect to the BBS because its public IP address would be changing a lot when you're carrying it with you to various places.

I think it's best to have a BBS on a PC that you can leave at home running all the time, and you could use the tablet to remote desktop into your BBS machine and interact with it that way. If you don't want to have a PC at home running all the time, you could look into having your BBS be hosted in the cloud (and I'm pretty sure you could still remote desktop into it to work on it). Marisag here on Dove-Net does some remote BBS hosting, from what I've seen.

By running it on a remote server. The remote server might be part of (some person's definition of) "the cloud". You don't have to run a BBS out of your home, although many/most people do.

I thought I'd be the first mobile bbs ever.

I could always run one on my Android phone using Magic DOSBox, but didn't see the point. And I have a Linux netbook that is running Magicka BBS. :)

So what happened to Mr. Proper now? Is he gone for good?

He's got serious drug problems and the whole time he's ran synchronet he would pop in and pop out of activity. I'm not even sure if he's alive.

he has a generic name [tim smith] so it's hard to look him up.

i looked at one of his last posts and he was staying people were attacking him and pretending to be him and 'hacking' him and messing up things that only he had access to and that he configured.

he said i was doing name spoofing [of who] and other weird stuff. honestly i dont have time in my life to do this. another time he said i had a botnet and that's why i joke about it with another guy here.

he just was super paranoid and i think in the end he just didnt configure
    his bbslink correctly.

now after reading my posts i see mr proper was on dialup at this time. i doubt he was being attacked by anybody, and i doubt that his systems were even up for any length of time except when he was specifically using them.

oh, i looked him up via his ham tag and he's still alive and posting on fb.

Do you expect to be moving your BBS machine around a lot?

    Sometimes. Why you ask that?

You mentioned possibly being the first mobile BBS ever. It sounded like tha
    anyway..

I remember a few bbs's in the 90's that ran on laptops and would post what phone # they would be at on other networked message forums. I don't recall the reason for why they were mobile. Maybe they were brought to/from work?

Maybe they were trying thwart phone tracing?

Dunno. I just remember a few. It seemed like a neat idea back then.

    Thanks,

Maybe that would be useful if they were running a warez BBS or had some other reason they didn't want the phone to be traced. Otherwise, perhaps they just had a leftover laptop and decided to set up a BBS on it.

I get the impression a pirate warez site run in that manner would be the sort of site pedophiles and child pronographers would use to share pictures.

Regarding the thwarting of phone tracing, I had a friend in the late 1990's
who worked for a regional cell provider. One evening he received a call a channel on one of their switches "stuck open," or has been active for an abnormal amount of time. Back then, calls rarely lasted longer than a
certain time threshold, so a tech had to be called in to visit that tower station and determine the problem. He tapped in to listen to see if the
call wasn't a system glitch, and what he heard on the line was what sounded like arabic language. This got the government involved (didn't say which agency) however they traced the number to a cell phone in a motel room. There was a table in the room that consisted of several cell phones hard wired to power, and every two phones would be connected to work as a relay. Someone
in one part of the world would call in to one phone, then the other would be dialed into the desired destination, then the phones would be couple so that the destination would be untracable. The guys running the operation weren't that valuable as intelligence assets, either. They were hired through a
third party, and knew better to not ask ay questions or attempt to guess who was on the line.
