I have used several linux distro over the years, always have a Slackware version running on something, but I have never used CentOS, does it update similar to a Deb* type distro, aka apt-get or is it as much of pain in the ass as slackware to update?

i dont think centos has many repositories if you get apt-get working

i think i used yum with it. i'm an idiot and ran it just fine.
pretty sure yum is better.

I used to use Slackware since like '90 or so, but eventually switched to Ubuntu. I now run Ubuntu 18 on my home machine, and 16 on my servers... Ubuntu is very easy to update and keep patched...

CentOS uses Yum, which is conceptually similar to apt. You install packages with

yum install <package>

Yum will also update packages that way.

Don't know if you can even do that. Back in the early Red Hat days, you could install apt-get on Red Hat, and manage it in a manner similar to Debian, ut then yum came along, and anyone using apt-get simply switched to yum, since it was already installed and ready to go.

I use Debian, Raspian, Linux Mint, Lubuntu and CentOS these days. :)

One thing about CentOS is that it tends to not have the latest versions of software - They have an attitude to make it more conservative, with tried-and-tested versions of software, since it's designed to be a stable server OS. CentOS is intended to be compatible with RedHat, but use packages that have an open license (free of RedHat's license fees). So it has an update mechanism very similar to RedHat.

CentOS is basically a re-release of Red Hat Enterprise, and uses the same versions of packages. RHE is intended as a solid server based distro, so the conservative selection of packages is understandable, with an emphasis on tried and true over bleeding edge. Debian Stable is also a little conservative, but you can easily go more up to date with Debian Testing, which is generally quite workable, with a lot moe up to date software, or Unstable, which is more bleeding edge (use at your own risk!). :)

I agree, I have Ubuntu 16.04 LTS on a couple systems here, though they are mostly idle, my main webserver is on a Slackware 14.2 (Started with Slackware 2 in '95) but I am not liking how the update system works

I used to use Red Hat back in the late 90's early 2000's ... still get the newsletters lol ... can't say I am a big fan, so I guess I wouldn't be a big fan of Centos either

CentOS is pretty easy to use, and does have some simple update processes.
It uses if I remember correctly, YUM as its package manager for installing/updating packages. And yes its similar to apt-get in that way (although serious linux users would probably slap me for saying that)...
CentOS is a fork of RedHat which, is its own beast... If you're familiar with debian or any other *nix types you'll get the hang of the quirks of CentOS/RedHat/Fedoria quickly.

FYI if you sign up to be a RedHat developer, you can get a free copy of RHEL for devloper use. Then you can compare the diffs between centOS and the big brother RHEL.
