• UPS battery backup not working

From Nightfox@VERT/DIGDIST to All on Friday, February 09, 2018 19:36:56
In 2009, I bought a CyberPower 1350avr battery backup UPS for my main desktop PC. Several months ago, it started beeping, and I think its battery had died - If I remember, it was showing no battery charge on the LCD screen. I've been meaning to replace the battery or the whole UPS unit but haven't gotten around to it yet. Tonight, I went to turn the UPS on again to make sure it would still turn on, but it's not.. All that happens is the light behind its power button flickers. I'm not sure if a new UPS battery would fix it or if the UPS is shot and needs to be replaced.

This page reports similar symptoms to yours, and that a new battery cured it:

Apparently it only cost them $32; probably worth trying, not much of a gamble.

you should call them up. i have a ups backup but it's weird and last time the power went out it did a siren and expected me to push a button to provide power to my devices, which sucked. i never read the manual so not sure if i can configure it another way. there's also software to control it but i cant connect. i am near an industrial area and never lose power so dont need one anyways.

depending on the battery being used I would just about be afraid to fool with it. I'm sure they are using some type of traditional lead-acid core battery instead of anything with Lithium. If it is any type of Lithium battery, I'd get that that out of the house. those things are ticking time bombs when charging if they are screwed up or "puffy" in any way. I really don't know enought about UPS to know but I would hope they would'nt use Li-Ion, etc.

I saw some similar posts online and was wondering about that. I suppose $32 isn't much.

They certainly can be dangerous, but usually they're designed so that nothing catastrophic happens when they fail. (IIRC the 'puffy' thing as described is what happens when a failure is safely contained.) They should be handled with some caution, but on the other hand they're user-replaceable in all kinds of devices.

Just a cautaionairy taile.. Lio-ion may not be too dangerous but thay have been known to catch fire from time to time when charging. especially if mistreated. I've had 2 of the cheap tablets sent to me to be fixed because they get "hot" and start acting "strange" open them up and the lipo packs inside are puffed to the point to where if they puffed anymore they would have either taken the tablet apart or caught fire. I know they really don't explode, but from what I've seen one would'nt want one to goff in their home, expecially if unattented, and at most times it happens during the charging cycle. As yo say laptops and other devices have been using the technology for years, but they have been built good, and usually priced to a point where people who own them take good care of them. now that there are 20-40 dollar tablets out there and a device with a lipo battery in every hand, especially kids, who use these devices while charging them, and the qc is pretty much non-existant it wil happen more and more.

and yes, they are that dangerous. though I have'nt had one burn up with me, I've seen what they can do, and how hard they are to extinguish. I have lipo bags for all my RC batteries. and even the expensive high quality batteries with age, over so many recharge cycles start to puff and lose their ability to hold the right voltage, etc. and even though laptops and other devices may not put as much strain on the batteries as an RC plane, or multirotor does, the issues really is'nt in the use of them, its when they are being recharged that creates the issues.

I'm not sure they're that dangerous..

Any battery technology can be dangerous, afterall, they are an energy store. I have heard of lead-acid based UPSs catching fire. If the charging circuit fails and dumps excess voltage and current into the battery, or if the battery develops a fault, such as a collapsed cell, then it can turn ugly, as the electrolyte boils off, or excess hydrogen gas forms inside the confines of a sealed battery. Li-ion batteries store more energy in the same space, so failures can be more spectacular.

I had a phone battery that puffed up big time. Surprisingly it still worked fine with no apparent loss of capacity. I treated it with kid gloves until I could source a replacement.

yes, all batteries can be dangerous and they have dangerous chemicals and gasses.

YEs, I defiantly would to, would more than likely charge it outside knowing my phobia of lipo batteries. :)

and the main reason is cheap tablets, I've seen more than 3 of them with batteries so puffed they actually started breaking the plastic around the screws, I'm very amazed they did'nt pop.

I *believe* that only happened with one single Galaxy Note model. The FAA had to blacklist it from commercial flights just in case one blew up.
