If the BBS you are using is exposing NNTP and offline newsgroups read could do like Thunderbird for example.

That would work, provided you only use one device to read the newsgroups. The trouble with NNTP is that lastread pointers are stored on the client side, so once you use multiple devices, or switch from NNTP to another mode of access, you are likely to end up going over the same messages again, unless you take care to synchronise when switching from one to the other, which can be time consuming to do.

I prefer to use QWK for offline BBS access. Bluewave would be even better, as it's a superior format, but not all BBS software supports that format (Mystic and Synchronet don't).

For a reader, I use Multimail, because it's available native on Windows, Mac and Linux.

I agree, just that for ios there is no alternative for now :-(

Nor Android. The odd thing is you can run a FTN point on an Android device, but you can't do QWK/Bluewave, but in my mind, QWK is a lot more practical for that platform. I'd like to be able to login on my phone and download a QWK packet. The roads I'm likely to be on over the next few weekends (while sitting on a bus) are ideal candidates for offline mail - intermittent Internet access and over an hour on the road at a stretch.

Just tried multimail on mac and .....

    .... it's not for me :-(

I'm not r37r0 1337 enough, the dos with awful colour turned me off and the reply interface .....

    .. I've closed the app

I'll try bluewave. But unless I was running this from a dos machine i don't
    see the fun :-/

I got cozy with modern stuff i guess :-(

Reply interface is simply hit "R", and in 99% of cases, press enter to accept the defaults. What editor you get is not a fault of Multimail - it depends on an editor on your system. On Windows, it defaults to using Notepad.

Oh, OK. Yes, SyncTerm has a nice interface. I also love that it asks what to do when a download has a duplicate file name.
