Could be either. Do you know the operating range of your processor and have a way to check it's current temp?

I think I would likely need to try Speccy. I also downgraded the
graphics performance of my mmo during the hot weather to directx 9
instead of 11.

there is a good chance that it's over heating, try moving it to a cooler spot or add a fan.
1st thing I would do though is un plug it pull off side panels and take it outside, then I would use my air compresser to blow out all the dust bunnies. or canned air would also work.
you could also go into bios and see what your CPU temp is.

My computer is right by the central air duct in my Den, I do take it and blow it out occasionally I am thinking about gettin a new motherboard cpu mem combo this PC is getting old and I need something that will rip my DVD'd to MKV faster, right now it takes 3 hours per DVD.

With the right CPU and graphics card its supposed to rip a DVD to MKV or MP4 in 15 minutes, but my setup was bought in like 2005 so its out dated for the video stuff.

Easiest way is to substitute a known good one.

Otherwise you'd need to check voltges (under load) and a CRO for checking supply ripple would be handy too.

I have dual dvd burners on this old PC and I start the encoding and click the checkbox that turns of the PC when it's done, then I goto bed :)
this old PC still works pretty good.

You can buy a power supply tester NewEgg or Amazon for pretty cheap. I've used them, they're not hard to figure out.

he probably needs to clean off his thermal paste and apply some new stuff.

but he probably has a hw problem that is causing the rebooting. he needs to trouble shoot.

The top 3 culprits for random reboots that I've seen are:

Overheating CPU.
Faulty RAM.
Faulty power supply.

I have also seen a faulty motherboard do it too.

In all cases, except the first (because diagnostics are available in the BIOS), substitution of suspect components is the best way to troubleshoot. CPU overheating is usually caused by either faulty heatsink mounting, or a failed CPU fan.

Last problem of this nature I've dealt with was a faulty power supply, easy $50 fix. :)

Sorry to jump on your thread! Overheating CPU, alot of times cleaning the old Thermal Paste off the heatsink and CPU & reapplying will work ! =) (I prefer arctic silver)

I've only struck this issue once, had a lot more CPU fans die in the early Pentium days. Modern CPU fans seem to be extremely reliable.

Yeah, I've found it hard to match RAM if there's been some time between purchases, easiest to buy all your RAM at the one time. I've had issues on a couple of occasions. The first was with a desktop I went to add RAM to. Think I ended up buying a second stick and replacing the original RAM, so it had a matched pair. The second was an old Dell laptop. I never got this upgrade to work, because the original 256M was soldered in, and I couldn't get a close enough match for stability. :(
