• Windows 7 folder and file association issues

From Nightfox@VERT/DIGDIST to All on Sunday, February 08, 2015 10:52:46
    Hi all,

I use Windows 7 on my main PC, and recently I've started having a couple issues with folder view options and file associations.

Windows 7 doesn't seem to be saving my folder view options anymore - For instance, if I open a folder and change its view to "Details", the next time I open that particular folder again, the view is reset back to default. It used to save the last view option I set. I'm not sure what changed to make it keep resetting the folder views back to default.

Another issue I've been having is that when I want to choose a different program to open a particular file, the "Browse" functionality seems to be broken now - If the program I want isn't in the list, I'll click "Browse" to select a different program, but after I select a program, it doesn't add that program to the list and let me use it.

Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks in advance.

    Nightfox

go into your folder prefs and click restore defaults.
then do reset folders and choose your settings and then do apply to all folders.

the association thing i'm not sure about. it kinda seemed to have a mind of its own, and i would just do open with anyways.

One of the programs we use (at work) after cleaning up systems with viruses/spyware/adware is a program called Tweaking Tool. It is a good program to do that kinda thing.

I'm fairly confident it's not a virus I have. I've used a program called CCleaner, which is designed to keep the Windows registry clean, but I suspect it might have done a little too good of a job and removed/tweaked some things that it shouldn't have..

Tweaking Tool is not a program to remove viruses an such, we use it as a general fixing tool afterwards. It goes thorugh your registry/system files to verify they have the proper permissions, fix file associations, etc. CCleaner is good for cleaning unwanted temp files that build up and deleting orphaned registry entries.

dont "clean" your windows registry with ANYTHING. those days of doing that shit are over. you will do more harm than good. if you feel your registry is bloated, reinstall your os or restore a restore point.

Sounds promising - we use a program called Combofix to remove Malware, but it's been known to change explorer behavior -- once on my system a single-click opened folders and made explorer odd to use. Tweaking Tool would have been nice to have.

We use ComboFix for bad infections... but Tweaking Tool is not a Virus/Adware/Spyware removal tool. It fixes stuff in windows after the Viruses/Adware/Spyware has been yanked out by programs like ComboFix...
