• Riptel in Wine on a Mac

    Hey everyone,

Ever since folks on Dovenet brought me up to speed on RIP (I never realized
how great some of the RIP art was back in the day), I've wanted to see some of it in action.

My first step was to try Ripterm in Dosbox. I had been warned it didn't work well, but I wanted to give it a shot anyway. Alas, no matter which version of Ripterm I used, the RIP rendering is frequently broken and code spills across the screen.

The next option was Riptel in Wine. I have been told that this works great.

Indeed, this works part way for me. I am using WineBottler on my Mac (OS X Mavericks). Riptel installed and it runs fine. I have been able to log on to
my own BBS, and to other much better RIP boards and see their RIP menus and screens.

The problem is not the RIP part -- it's the ANSI/ASCII part.

Any "plain" text on the BBS (not rendered in RIP) is invisible to me in
Riptel. I cannot see what I'm typing when I log in. I cannot see messages displayed in a messageboard. I can see a pure RIP menu fine, but if it's a
    text menu, no dice.

Just for comparison I tried installing PuTTY and mTelnet in Wine. Both of
those work great. No invisible type.

Anyone have any experience with this problem with Riptel in Wine?

    Things I've tried:
    * Put an ANSI.SYS file (that I found on the web) into WINDOWS\SYSTEM and WINDOWS\SYSTEM32
    * Change font size in Riptel's .ini file.
    * Deleting other installations of Wine and reinstalling

    Things I'm wondering about:
    * Could there be a problem with truetype? Riptel installed a Ripscrip.ttf file into WINDOWS\FONTS, but I don't know what exactly this font is used for: Riptel's application menus? Plain text in the terminal? RIP graphics in the terminal?
    * Is this something wrong with Ctl3d32.dll? Probably not, but the installer
log said "Date/Time: Following file not copied. File Copy: C:\windows\SYSTEM32\Ctl3d32.dll"
