• Worldlink...

From the doctor@VERT/QBBS to ALL on Thursday, December 05, 2013 00:27:00
I think it might be fun to try to link Worldgroup into my current BBS software, as I run a MBBS (soon to be upgraded to WG3) system as well as this one, for the old members of The Rock Garden.

I've written some of an NNTP <>> > > > Quarkware gateway, so I could have the same message bases (including dove.net) on both systems.

I'd like to link teleconference on MBBS/WG with the chat system on Quarkware, which is just an IRC server (the BBS provides an IRC client).

I can't find an easy way to do this. There use to be something called WORLDLINK for WG, but it's gone. I've found a couple of WG modules to link WG systems together... but I don't have a reg code and even if I did it wouldn't really help me... I'd still have to write some sort of code to make Quarkware talk to it.

    Any ideas?

I have linked my bbs experience with synchronet to majorbbs 6.25. I do have a WG3 model running too that I have been toying around with. I am not entirely sure if you are set on how to provide your vision of this but feel free to take a peek at what I did over at telnet://bbs.wehack.net

Cool... I'll check that out. Right now I'm playing with having my BBS software automatically create accounts and connect to MBBS... basically to use it as a MBBS game server. I have that bit more or less working.

I also have (limited) theme support written into this software. I'm toying with the idea of making an MBBS theme so I then don't have to deal with any of the rest of MBBS, which I really don't like.

I'm waiting for a logon id for your system. How do you connect to MBBS from Synch? I can't get rlogon to work... so I've basically written code to glue them together via telnet... but it's kind of a pain...

mbbs dont have any networking proticols in it, but netware and I forget the others, but no networking. and these are if your version is compiled for it.

The MBBS versions relied on Vircom MajorTCP. Which, of course, you had to buy. For a huge sum.

The "newer" Worldgroup stuff has all that built in... as the world was moving to the Internet, the folks at Galacticom bet on the custom client/server model (like AOL and Prodigy at the time) and bet wrong.

It didn't really matter though, which way they went, BBSes as a business were doomed.

Thankfully. I hated the idea of a BBS as a business. It marginalized the small community BBSes and made BBSing a business venture in the minds of some.

yeah it was amusing though when these guys would get a small amount of cash and then they'd think they can quit their job and make a living out of it.

there's even a few of them around. i signed up for a new bbs and there was nothing to do there so i never called back. next day i got an email saying that my security has been downgraded and if i want to be a member i have to pay 20/month.

another guy said i was 'defrauding his business' because i didnt enter my address in the new user form. i went on his website and had some laughs. "06/02/2011 - Galactic Empire RESET
This game was totally won by Dragon congrats! Too bad your membership expired or you would have won 15 days."

now i see the clown dropped the rates.
paypal kept banning him so that is kinda odd.

hah.. That's funny. I'm surprised a BBS sysop would want to personally call a user's phone number these days. I thought that was a bit creepy even back in the BBS heyday in the early-mid 90s when I first started using BBSes. I never knew why sysops felt the need to do that.

BBS call-back verifier doors I could understand though, in order to try to elimindate duplicate user accounts.

to write for the majorbbs or worldgroup you need a few tools and the bas source code. and for mbbs you also need pharlap dos extender
all which is hard to find unless you had it to begin with
which I do, I have mbbs 6.25 and worldgroup 3.2 all with source and utils

I take it you have to write this stuff in C (not ++)?

I've never written a program in C, ever. I can read it, as I've ported plen of things.

I don't suppose I could get my hands on these tools?

    prolly
and you need borland c 3.1 too.
I can send you a game source code too.
and you need a full majorbbs package too.
so you also get the btrieve package. thats mbbses database engine

hah.. That's funny. I'm surprised a BBS sysop would want to personally call a user's phone number these days. I thought that was a bit creepy even back in the BBS heyday in the early-mid 90s when I first started using BBSes. I never knew why sysops felt the need to do that.

BBS call-back verifier doors I could understand though, in order to try elimindate duplicate user accounts.

I could barley pay the phone bill as it was. I'm going to use call back verification? I don't think so. ;-0

That's why I tended to only call local BBSes.. No extra phone charges that way. :)

So, how much did that lesson cost you? :)

My parents phone bill was $150 the first month I started calling - got burned by intra-LATA toll calls. One BBS was 4 miles away and Zone 3.

No lesson required - I only called local BBSes, so my BBS usage affect the phone bill.

You must have had a different phone system or billing system where you grew up. I don't know what a "zone" means in terms of a phone system. :P Where I am, it has always been area codes, and phone numbers that are considered long-distance are usually ones in other states. There were plenty of BBSes in my metro area, so I didn't have to call long-distance to use a BBS.

it cost me a bit because in the next city was where all the cool bbses were. then they were doing this stupid thing in my area where there's the same area code but it's long distance. so i put up my bbs and people from other cities were calling my bbs and getting charge LongD and they were pissed off.
