Hello Everyonee, I've been lurking in the Dove-net message baes for a couple of months now. Just trying to refresh my memory about SBBS. I was at one time a Synchronet SysOp back in the day when it was a commercial software.I ran "Born to be Wild BBS" out of San Diego,CA. My handle was H-D in those days. And moved to Kansas City,MO in 1995. And eventually dropped out of the BBS scene when the internet got popular. And after he created the telnet access I came back on line for a couple of years as "Friends of Bill W. BBS" And went by KCVWDOC. And I eventually dropped out of the scene again. I just had a heck of a time getting any users. 90% of the people I knew didn't know how to telnet or use an IRC client or FTP client, etc. So eventually out of frustration I gave into the fact that I couldn't compete with yahoo groups etc.I knew that what the BBS offered was superior if people would just take the time to learn how to use a few clients. But if they couldn't point and click it was hard to find users. So between that frustration and life being busy I closed it down. I became disabled with a spinal injury going 4 years ago and live in extreme chromic pain. So I'm thinking of getting back into it. I'm looking for someone that will help me out by testing the security of a VPN connection into SynchroNet telnet interface and web interface. You all will know 99% more than me about this. I'm not a tech person by training or occupation. I don't know if this will make any sense. But, I want to find out if the VPN connection thru telnet and web is really a secure tunnel that can't be broken into with the many tools that I'm sure some of you are familar with. Any help, ideas, etc. would be greatly appreciated. Please forgive me for being long winded here. I'm not usually that way. I just wanted to let people that where here back in the day know who I am. This is the wrong message area for Synchronet-related support/questions, but to
quickly answer your inquiry, I can't think of why you would want to use a VPN for running a BBS. That doesn't make any sense to me. Perhaps if you posted (in
the Synchronet Discussion area) what you're trying to accomplish, others may be
able to help you accomplish that.

I don't use VPN. cant really get it to work without paying or subscribing for
a service or buying hardware or something.

I do hwever, use Logmein.com for free and have my board on an inexpensive off lease pc stored away in a credensa. since it doesnt have a monitor after setti ng it up to work with logmein, I access it from my Mac. sort of like a remote desktop. I can also access it from my ipad or iphone if the need comes up.
the board's computer has an SSD so it starts up in seconds and is silent. I gu ess if you wanted users to gain vpn access to your board this may not be your cup of tea.

Just use SSH instead. It's pretty secure for what it does, which is encrypt the entire remote session.
