• 'Doze 7 (64) application for capturing youtube/streaming video?

Does anybody have any recommendations or suggestions regarding an application that can take youtube (and preferably other streaming video) sources and recreate a stand-alone .avi/.mp4 or whatever format video file?

Check Firefox's addons. I'm not at home at the moment, but there is a popular one...can't recall the name... it will allow you to select and save the stream data. I believe it saves as .FLV (flash video). Don't know if it saves HTML5 video streams, but I'm sure there's an addon for that, too.

Ah, yes. Soon as I clicked the audio/video/photo category there was one touted at the top of the screen. This will work well for what I need. I was hoping for something that I could just feed a link to that'd do it independent of a browser, or perhaps something in Chrome, but there's a reason that I splurged on extra ram for this machine. :) Firefox it will be.
    Many thanks!

How can you not max out your ram these days when 16Gigs will only set you back about $80. I'd have more if my motherboard supported it.

That said, what project are you working on? (Curious mind)

I've been using TVersity which converts web streams into something you can view on your HDTV so you can watch things like Hulu(Free), or YouTube videos on your home theater, the only problem is it's sorta picky as to what audio card you use, but that may not be exactly what you were trying to do.

Wow. I last invested in RAM a little over 2 years ago and I had to squeeze every penny to milk out enough to get 12G as a single parent & college student. I am going to have to upgrade, methinks. :) Finally finished up school for now; unfortunately this was due to financial reasons necessitating that I take a break, not due to the degree that I had originally enrolled for. I did get my AS out of it, at least, but I wasn't able to find any sort of employment with it in this neck of the woods just yet.
Well, my project right now doesn't have so much to do with IT or media manipulation, if that's what you were wondering. I've just noticed that a certain subset of youtube & google videos seem to be removed from public access after they draw enough attention. In this case, they're primarily videos of financial, political, and military matters. I really hate censorship and believe that a well educated populous is pretty essential to any shot that people have of making informed decisions regarding the operations of their industries, governments, and the like, so I'm just trying to do my part to archive information that influential entities don't want in the limelight. :)

That's true. RAM is so cheap these days, I figured I might as well max out my RAM. No more worrying about running low on RAM for a while.

I find it interesting that starting only maybe 5-6 years ago (at least for
home PC users), it became very important to use a 64-bit OS to be able to use more than 4GB of RAM. 4GB used to seem way out of reach for so long.. I remember, in the early 1990s, when just 4 megabytes of RAM was plenty and 8 megabytes of RAM seemed like a lot. That was back when RAM used to cost about $100 per megabyte, too. Times have certainly changed..

Reminds me of adding 3 megabytes of RAM to a 386SX/25 motherboard - DIP RAM - 24 separate chips.

At the time, the BBS ran on a 286 with 1 megabyte of RAM.

Crud, old message, I can't believe I didn't say anything before, but I think I had been drinking so...

FRAPS! Great little application, is designed for recording DirectX Games to uncompressed video files (which you can easily drag into MS Movie Maker to compress). Works great, works with anything that uses DirectX/OpenGL, so YouTube videos can be recorded. Also If you're in Vista+ there's an option to record the whole screen.

The free version of Fraps is good, leaves a tag on the video, but I registered Fraps like 10+ years ago and I still get free updates all the time. Worth every penny. Here's a short video of me playing SWTOR (http://youtu.be/byDn3PzfD4k)

Now obiviously this might not work for you alone, but you might be able to combine it with a software mixing program like a WebCam mixer which combines video streams so you can have your desktop and a webcam in the corner.

Hopefully by now you got something. :)

What you pay for is the 3-5 year warranty with onsite service. Some people like to tinker/build, but some just want to plug the thing in and go.

Now that said, I have no idea if Dell's service is all that. I know at my job that's all we have, the Dell Small/Med. Business team is really friendly, and the computers are competitively priced. It also looks nice that all our computers look the same. In an office it makes an impression, sorta.

Dell at the consumer level has been hit or miss lately, but with an Alienware I bet you get the better Dell support team.

Times have certainly changed..

I worked in game development for a long time (EA, MS, Sony), and when you develop for PC you have to cater to the common demoninator. So for example if you load up Steam and find their hardware survey you'll notice that probably 90-95% of the PCs out there are running 32-bit Windows XP with .5-2Gigs RAM. So when you develope PC games, that's what you have to develop your game for.

Now that ram is so cheap, people are installing 64-bit OSs and maxing out their ram, but it'll probably be years before you start seeing games that use that kind of memory.

The Epic Games guys (Unreal) just issued a press release that praised Sony for their PS4 design. It's basically a PC with 8Gig's of DDR5 Graphic Ram, and it's simple enough that it's accessable, like the PC. So you have a platform that starts at that level and you don't have to worry about the little guy who hasn't upgraded their system in 10 years.

I have sworn off consoles for the last like 5 years, so I doubt I'll get a PS4 (at least at first).

I bought a used Dell laptop from geeks.com for cheap - I think it was $219. The monitor made an annoying hum and the keyboard was showing its age. Just for kicks I looked up the system on Dell's warranty site and found out it had 4 weeks' of onsite service left from the original purchase.

I called Dell, transferred the warranty to me, had them come out; they replaced the keyboard, logic board and monitor. Not a bad deal.

my mac mini runs server class unix on less then 256 megs of ram.

I used to run X-less linux boxes with 128 MB of RAM, and had them run apache, sendmail, IMAPD, and everything else I had on my domain. :)

well mac unix has a huge gui thou.
if I ran it without it would prolly run on much less.
I used to know a whole isp that ran on a bank of minis.

probably 90-95% of the PCs out there are running 32-bit Windows XP with .5-2Gigs RAM. So when you develope PC games, that's what you have to develop your game for.

    I can understand that.

Now that ram is so cheap, people are installing 64-bit OSs and maxing out their ram, but it'll probably be years before you start seeing games that use that kind of memory.

One of the reasons I maxed out the memory in my PC is so that I can run many applications at the same time. If a single application (be it a game or otherwise) used that much memory, then I might be concerned with that software. :P

Yeah, I've heard that one of the advantages to developing games for consoles is that console hardware usually doesn't change much (if at all) over the life of the console, which greatly simplifies game development for consoles.

I have sworn off consoles for the last like 5 years, so I doubt I'll get a PS4 (at least at first).

I haven't sworn off consoles, but I rarely use them. I mainly play games on my PC. I currently have a Nintendo Wii that I bought a couple years ago and a 3DS that I bought more recently because there were some games on them that I thought were cool, but as it turns out, I rarely play them. I often like to play 3D shooters, real-time strategy games (Warcraft 2, Age of Empires 2, and the like), and sometimes games that you can download for free - All of which I think are much easier to play with a mouse and keyboard.

It also looks nice

i dont want a 3-5 year warranty on a computer with onsite service.
i'll just buy another computer. they're cheap enough nowadays.
or... just replace the bad component myself. everyone can do that.

Does MacOS run AT&T SysV runlevels? it'd be cool to have a GUI-less environment on a mac Mini.

Although I'd probably be better off buying a Zotac for a quarter of the
    price.

If it weren't for Minecraft, I'd still be running on a single-core Pentium with 3 GB of RAM. I even ran the BBS as a VM under it and it worked fine for my needs.

Desktops, yes. Laptops, not so much. Parts are more expensive and
replacement is time-consuming. It's a personal choice whether or not you
want to spend the time and risk breaking something with a laptop.

Reminds me of adding 3 megabytes of RAM to a 386SX/25 motherboard
    - DIP RAM - 24 separate chips.

I just upgraded my Atari 800 to 1MEGABYTE of ram (1088Kb, to be
    exact), it freaking rocks.

my mac mini runs server class unix on less then 256 megs of ram.

You should see what my Atari can do with 48Kilobytes of ram. Anyone up for M.U.L.E.?

Me either, but I think I have all of them, I buy them and I can never part with them. Hell I have a Dreamcast with a Network adapter (super rare), 2 keyboards (for typeing of the dead) and maracca's (for Samba de Amigo). I find the older stuff more fun/valuable, and it can't get old if you get rid of it.

I would absolutely loved to play a game of M.U.L.E. I wonder if there is an Atari 400/800 emulator out there that has TCP/IP support for multiplayer games like M.A.M.E. has.

Don't think you can with Altirra, which I think is one of the best emulators out there. Maybe the demand isn't there. Should talk to the author... You can probably raise him on atariage.com forums.

Would be interesting though. There is an ethernet adapter for A8s, but I don't know if it's very good.
