Hello all, so I recently got back into BBSing about two weeks or so ago. Right now, I'm running Telix in a DOSBox window with the modem emulator enabled. However, I feel like this is probably not the most optimal setup for some reason (probably because I'm using the same software I used to call dialup BBSes in like 1995, haha). I went looking for both a good Windows terminal emulator (but I'll use PuTTY if need be, as I already have it installed) and a Hayes-compatible modem emulator.

The second bit seems a bit tricky. I have been playing about with TCPSer and a couple of other freeware solutions, but I'm getting nowhere. Windows complains about there not being serial ports, and although I could get TCPSer to bind to a port, and therefore I could use PuTTY as stated above, that won't be ideal for me if I can't support things like ANSI or file transfers (and yes, I do those sometimes on BBSes... there are still things you can't get on a Google search that you can stumble across on a BBS!).

What do you guys use, and what am I doing wrong?

Syncterm and Mtelnet both work well. Syncterm is available for Mac, Windows and Linux. Mtelnet is WIndows-only.

Deuce's SyncTERM is available on multiple platforms. It can do file transfers, renders ANSI properly, and the whole shebang.

You could use syncterm:

It's ANSI support isn't perfect (it doesn't work with the text aquarium screen saver on my BBS correctly) but it's good enough for most things, and has a nice retro look to it.

...or...

Just use the Telnet that comes with Windows (in Vista and later you have to add it as a component). It's ANSI support is actually better (the aquarium displays more or less correctly).

Most folks today use SyncTERM. It's ANSI/cp438 compatible (even
supports OverkillTerm) and chats over telnet normally.

I"ve used com2tcp (the freeware one, not the you gotta pay for thing by someone else) to get older com port based apps to play nice over telnet.
So if you really want to use Telix or maybe ripterm you could try that.

You could use syncterm:

I am seeing that name pop up quite a bit on here. I will have to check it out. The other thing that would be nice about using a Windows terminal program is that I could probably cut-and-paste text (like URL's, especially) with it, whereas with anything running under DOSBox, you don't get that ability.

you should probably use mt32 [in windows] and synchterm for when you
are using linux.

One nice thing about SyncTerm and mTelnet is being able to have a dialing directory. bbs-scene.org has a downloadable dialing directory pre-populated with the entries from their telnet BBS list.

Yeah but it won't map it to a TCP port over telnet will it? I knwo it
can map to another virtual com port or any physical port on the box..
but don't think you could use it to attach to a telnet BBS.

Yeah, but you can map telnet to it and use it for IP only. You even dial ATDT <hostname> to connect. :)

Yeah, I ended up installing it and actually, I am using it right now. It's so much faster! (Probably because I'm not emulating a 57600 bps connection like in DOSBox.)

I'm sure it's got its uses. I'm thinking of calling com2tcp into service at work, where I have to manage (among many other, much newer things) a Merlin Legend/MAGIX system that was built in like 1996. The management interface is a 1200 bps (though I've gotten it to work at 2400 bps using an old laptop with it) serial connection, translated into an RJ-45 plug. I would love to hook that to a Linux server and share the serial port out as something my Windows workstation would see as an actual, viable serial port of its own. AT&T (oh, sorry, Lucent... oh, sorry, Avaya) only has this crappy old program called WinSPM to manage it. It will work on Win7 x64, but yeah...

It's the best telnet terminal program I've ever used. I tend to use it under linux, because it supports IBM high ascii characters.

Yes, exactly. It can. You open telix, point it to the re-mapped comm port, type ATDT <hostname or IP address> and it connects. VERY COOL.

i would rather go with telnetbbsguide's lists. it's actively maintained. diamond dave has syncterm and mt32 lists.

Sweet, did they finally get around to working those bugs out? Last time I tried to run a BBS under dosbox, the serial emulation was so buggy it was almost unusable for a BBS...lol

terminate works fine.

get bbsdosbox on bbstorrents and check out all the old terminal programs

i cant name off a laundry list, but file locking, issues with running multiple nodes, having to run it on a server with X if you are using linux
