• Syncterm and windows 7

From mmunson@VERT/INLANDUT to Deuce on Friday, October 23, 2009 18:02:55
Can Syncterm have settings in the installer where telnet could be associated with syncterm?

I dont think windows 7 has a native telnet program in it.

I think the installer does have that already.

    Hi Matt,

Windows 7 does not install Telnet client by default anymore. You can enable the feature: Control Panel > Programs > Turn Windows features on or off > Telnet client.

As far as handling the telnet:// URIs, I have not found a way to do this with Windows 7, but if anyone knows how to get it in the list of associated file types and protocols, please let me know.

    Kind regards,

The syncterm installer for windows does this already... http://bbsing.info/SyncTERM/

The syncterm installer for windows does this already...

I have installed it on 3 different machines running Windows 7 now, both x86 and x64 versions, and in none of the cases did it add an actual association in Windows (i.e., the list in Default Programs > Set Associations).

    Did this work for you?

When I click a telnet link, syncterm comes up... Not sure what needs to happen to add telnet/rlogin/ssh to the list, but links do indeed work using the installer, I create the registry entries needed for the above protocol handlers (as listed).

    Hey Tracker1,

Yes I would concur with that statement, although "telnet://" URIs are handled by SyncTerm for me, the TELNET protocol is not associated with SyncTerm in the list of default programs/protocols. My guess is that it's being handled, but not fully in the Windows way. Interesting, but at least it does work.

Are you sure that the list is supposed to contain protocols? Last time I looked, it was for *file* handlers only.

The protocols are after the file handlers (at least in win 7)... the syncterm installer does work, but not sure how/why it doesn't show up in the above mentioned list.

It did show up in the old listing (with the explorer folder view options), but not in this one... may dig into it if/when I find the time.

    Hey Deuce,

Yes. It's below the file types, you'll see various protocols in all caps at the bottom of your list.

Thanks for checking up on this for me, at least I can verify that I'm not the only person with this issue. At the same time, if the links work... I'm not sure there really is an issue apart from the fact that it's not actually on the list... alas.

Let me know if you turn up anything interesting!

Ah, I see them now... even in XP, it appears that you don't see SyncTERM listed until you click Advanced though... just the telnet handler itself. If Windows 7 doesn't create a telnet handler by default, maybe that's the reason.
