Hello everyone, I am new here. I am shopping around for a good voip router and was wondering if any of you had suggestions. So far I have been looking for an IAXy, but they are rare and pretty expensive. I am looking for a voip router to do some war-dialing.

Hello everyone, I am new here. I am shopping around for a good voip router a was wondering if any of you had suggestions. So far I have been looking for IAXy, but they are rare and pretty expensive. I am looking for a voip route to do some war-dialing.

War-dialing as in "it's 1980 and I'm trying to find unlisted Pentagon phone numbers with modems answering at the other end"? If so, that's awesome and welcome to the very small club of users of modems over VoIP.

You don't necessarily have to buy a router / VoIP device. You could just buy an analog terminal adapter like the Linksys PAP2T-NA, which connects to your existing router, is very configurable, and can handle two VoIP accounts at once.

It's been a while since I researched this stuff, so I couldn't give any other a dvice - the above ATA is what I ended up buying and works well enough for me. Then again, I haven't tried calling my BBS on the VoIP line for a while, so I h ave no idea how well it's working these days.

Thanks for the feedback. So with the Linksys PAP2T-NA just plug into my router and plug my modem in to the Linksys right? Sorry if this is an obvious question I am new to this.

Apologies if this message comes through twice. Minor trouble on my end.

The PAP2T-NA has two phone jacks, one for each of the two possible VoIP accounts that you can configure it to use. If you're only using one VoIP account, only the first phone jack will work, so just ensure that you've plugged your modem into the correct port.

If the device is able to connect your VoIP account successfully, you'll hear a dialtone when you pick up the phone connected to it (or if you try an ATDT from a terminal app when you're modem's connected.) At this point you'll want to change some settings through the PAP2T-NA web interface that will help your modem negotiate connections successfully.

From what I recall, I had to set the jitter level to the maximum (Extremely High, the setting is called), disable jitter buffer adjustment, disable silence suppression, disable echo cancellation, and for good measure I turned on any fax-specific settings just in case they might help.

I can now connect reliably to other systems at a blazing 2400bps. Let me know how it goes.
