• DVD Ripper?

From Angus McLeod@VERT/ANJO to All on Saturday, January 10, 2009 00:42:00
A friend of mine has decided to rip all his DVDs and store them on some
sort of "media" drive, that can connect to the TV for playback. Trouble
is, he doesn't have any ripping software.

I guess if it were me, I'd use MEncoder and figure out the options, but he isn't likely to want to do that. And I don't use Windows, so I have no recommendations to make WRT windows DVD rippers.

So any of you folks care to suggest/recommend a good DVD ripper for 'Doze
that is free for download and is not burdened with spy/malware or other undesirables? Preferably something you don't need a Ph.D in order to
    operate successfully?

    Thanks...

I suggest using mp4+avc(h.264/x264) for encoding. There are two
components, de-css and the rip/re-encoder. Handbrake is the best free re-encoder around... there are other options though... here's my prefs.

You don't have to re-encode, do you?

There are couple of programs that go by the name of "CloneDVD" that don't appear to re-encode. Or maybe they do and I just don't understand their marketing material. :-)
