From Ei2gyb@VERT/BUNGEE to All on Saturday, October 15, 2011 14:48:00
    Hi ALL,

Just got back into BBS's after a break for a while.
I have a new (Windows 7) system but noticed it no longer has hyper terminal & the Telnet from the command line is a bit crappy

Whats the best "free" software to use on the bbs's these days?

    Thanks & Regards

    Steve

Personally I like Synterm. Mulit platform and full screen makes me feel like I'm in the 90's again. :)
There are plenty of others out there though, and I'm sure other folks will chime in with other options for you.

Syncterm is excellent. I had to change the code a bit to replace the repeated coloured "SyncTERM" word on the sides of the screen with empty black space.

Syncterm is excellent. I had to change the code a bit to replace the repeated coloured "SyncTERM" word on the sides of the screen with empty black space.

You're running in console mode on a display with more than 80 columns? More details please! The SyncTERM tile is on my list of things to come up with a better idea for. Black I don't like as it hides the edges of the terminal screen.

Yes, I'm currently using the framebuffer console in Linux, which is essentially text mode screen display, at a resolution of 1024x768, so I'm getting a text resolution well over 80x25. I don't get to use all the width, but I do get to use all the height. Syncterm still limits itself to 80 wide, but thats OK.

Ideally, the colours would be configurable, but the light colours framing the telnet session either side were distracting, so I made it black.

Maybe you could just have a line either side? A frame? Like a thin vertical line down either side?

It's unlikely I would make it configurable. Not really worth the effort to me (though I would accept patches to do so).

Maybe you could just have a line either side? A frame? Like a thin
    vertical line down either side?

That could work... I'll think about drawing a box around it.

    Thanks for the feedback!

No problem, it's a great piece of software. I might try to make a patch, I wouldn't mind a programming project about now.
