The last medium-wave (MW) AM transmitters in Germany will be closed down on December 31, as digital transmission modes come into favor. The shutdown of the Deutschlandradio transmitters marks the end of German-language
programming˙transmitted from Germany˙in that part of the spectrum.

On the same day medium-wave Radio France AM transmitters will go dark. The transmitters shutting down there are associated with France Info, France Blue RCFM, and France Blue Elsass. Radio France said listener numbers have become "marginal," and the affected services will shift to FM and Internet broadcast outlets.˙

MW in Europe is approximately analogous to the AM broadcast band in the US.
