You know, I've got to say I'm a little bit surprised. I had thought that I was going to be the youngest one getting into things here, considering the hobby at age 37. It's good to see that there is new blood pouring into the mix. :)

I haven't been an active VE since November of 2011, but I can attest to the fact that up until that point we tested a good number of younger folks, and each of them were generally very well prepared for the exam and quite
motivated to get on the air...

That is outstanding to hear. Sometimes I look out on the younger generation and wonder if there's any hope. :) Maybe I just need to get more in touch with the pulse of what's going on out there instead of just looking out as a spectator. :)

I'm 35 and have been considering getting into HAM for a while now but just haven't yet. One reason I haven't yet is that I've heard it helps to have a big outdoor antenna, and right now I live in an apratment, so I can't really put up a big antenna outside. I suppose it's still possible to get into HAM radio without such an antenna though.

Others can chime in, but I've been looking into HAM, picked up a cheap BaoFeng UV-5R handheld; there are repeaters around me that once you connect through can let you get out beyond the reach of your local transmitter.

A sizeable antenna is useful for HF communications, but if your interests lie in VHF and UHF communications then a small antenna which can easily be mounted on a window ledge or inside would work just fine. There are even ways of utilizing interior antennas for HF work, but those generally represent a compromise between performance and convenience, whereas full size VHF and UHF antennas need not be a compromise. I say go for it, get your ticket and then you can begin to explore various antenna options.

I love the line of Baofeng/Pofung now Anytone too, radios. they let you get into VHF/UHF comms very cheap. I always thought Amateur Radio was out of my reach because of the prices i've seen with some of the units. When the lower priced radios started coming out I quickly got my tech license, the chinese radios are really a double edge sword, they are great for their price, actually IMHO they go above and beyond for their price, and now that I have been licensed for a while I have purchased some of the cheaper yaesu and kenwood radios and really do not see what all the fuss is about with them. A lot of people are just set in their ways I guess :)

The North Georgia area had a total of around 15 or so new Amateurs under the age of 18 last year, It is nice to know. our area seems to be very active anyway, sometimes the repeater set idle, but not long. We have a very active ARES/SKYWARN net, and always have a great turnout on the local club net. I want to get into HF soon, but so far hae so much to keep me busy with my hobbies, RC, Ham radio :)

We had 2 licensed hams in Northwest GA last year that were around 13. In fact the boy scout Jamboree on the air, etc helps to get a lot of new folks interested in amateur radio, as does the satellites and ISS.

Oh that's right, I forgot all about the Boy Scouts and their different affinities for things like that. I really need to get my son into something like that soon here...
