Just picked up an M44 Carbine Rifle today.. It is a russian made rifle with a 4 sided bayonet on the end.. Kick ass gun. It takes 7.62X54R and it is pretty damn accurate. I will try to get a pic of it up..

I bought one of those at a flea market awhile back, heck of a thing to shoot though it's damn loud. I picked up a crate of surplus rounds at aim surplus for quite cheep. If you don't mind shooting corrosive rounds check them out.

Windex with amonnia sprayed on the bolt and run through on a couple patches seems to work good for me though a humid Kentucky summer and about 300 rounds of ammo.

Is that for black powder? It's been a *long* time, but we used to use *boiling* water down the muzzle with the breech closed. We *always* got scalded! Or singed when we grabbed the hot metalwork.

Or do you just mean mercuric primers?

No no... It's for old corrosive military surplus ammo. A salt is formed in the reaction that lines the barrel and attracts moisture to the barrel. Regular gun cleaner will not dissolve the salt, ammonia (and I have heard hot soapy water too) will break down that salt so the barrel can be properly oiled to prevent rust.

Yes, Kentucky, where things rust without ever getting wet! ;-)
