There are places where you can go, pay a huge fee, and find a Cape Buffalo
or whatever you want, fenced in a couple acres of land. No need to
actually hunt him down, and no chance that he's going to actually escape.
You can virtually shoot him from outside the fence.

Hunting can be debased like anything else. Personally, since I don't have
to hunt for food, I think that varmint-hunting is the best challenge, and serves a useful purpose. Going after rats with a .22 cal. rifle is a
pretty challenging and valuable occupation, even though half the time
you've got to use a .22 Air Rifle so as not to endanger people's kids,
    etc.

Excellent. I need to re-aquire a weapon of some sort. I've been without
for my entire second marriage, thanks to my first wife. I _used_ to have quite a selection of rifles and shotguns. I only had 1 pistol though, it
was only a .22 but I REALLY wish I still had it. It was beautiful, 11
shot revolver, with pearl handles. I have no idea what it's value
was but I KNOW she didn't get anywhere NEAR what she should have.

My own thoughts on this, I don't really camp/hunt/fish much at all, but I beleive we have a natural right to do so, much more than say cage animals, and raise them in large, overstocked hurds..

Beyond this, we(mankind) has pretty much taken away the natural habitats of most game animals at a surprising rate of encroachment. We've also all but brought to extinction most of the natural predators of these animals, without hunting they would likely die off from overpopulation. (as man would if not for animal farming practices).

I say spread your ignorance elsewhere, if you feel the need for it.. unless you live in a home that has a minimal impact on the area's natural state, you have *no* place to talk... Long live Ted Nugent!

Hi all.. what guns do you folks like the best for home defense. Me, I glock 17 w/17 round mag under the edge of my couch because I always fa there. In my bedroom, I keep a Mossberg shotgun with a 20-inch barrel, with 7 rounds of 3" magnum buckshot. Ahhhh.. armed to the the teeth..

    One question: Why?
If I ever found myself in the situation where the area I was living in re me to use guns for my personal safety, I'd move.

It's possible that by the time you realized in you were in that situation, i be too late. Last time I checked house-invasion robberies have occured in ju about every U.S. city at one time or another.

I don't get this thing with guns in the USA. In the UK we are fine without guns, I'm 16 and I can live on my own without any fear of being attacked, even though I live in an area with a high amount of crime (mostly car theft, drugs, and assault). I don't know anyone who feels unsafe in their own home.

I think the problem is the fact that firearms are legal in the USA. If people didn't have them in the first place there would not be a big fear of being attacked by them, therefore people wouldn't need to carry them for defence. In my opinion carrying a weapon does not make you a tough person, I believe it makes you a weak one. I can see your point though if you have been involved with a gun related crime before, it would be for peace of mind.

    Anyway, there is my opinion...

    Anyway, there is my opinion...

Yeah, I think you and I aren't really entitled to an opinion on the matter. I live in a very low crime area, in fact, when we go on vacation, we don't lock our doors THEN either.

Somewhere that you simply cannot rely on strangers helping you (or even calling the police) and you have a reasonable fear of being accosted with a handgun (that is, densly populated areas of the USA) may make me want to carry some for of "personal protection". Though if it would be a gun or not I'm unsure. Last time my life was touched by violent crime I simply moved to a smaller centre.

For those of you interested in the story:
At approximately 6:30am, my and my future wife were awakened by someone at the door. Upon answering it, we discovered an RCMP (police) officer. The conversation went slong these lines (RCMP denoted by 'R', myself denoted by 'M' and my wife denoted by 'S')

    R: Good morning.
M: Good morning officer, what seems to be the problem?
R: Sorry to wake you, I just need to ask if you know anything about the dead body behind your garage.
    S: WHAT?!?!
R: We discovered a dead body behind your garage this morning.
M: In the yard or in the alley?
R: He's in the alley. It appears that he's been stabbed.
M: Well, I certainly don't know anything about it.
    S: Me neither.
R: You didn't hear any strange noises last night? Yelling? Anything like that?
M: No sir, I can ask the kids before they go to school though.
    R: You have children?
    S: Yes, 12 and 7.
R: I would appreciate if you would ask them <handing over a card> please call me if they heard anything.
M: Do you want us to call you if they didn't hear anything too?
    R: That won't be necessary.
M: Ok... anything else? Want some coffee?
R: No thank you, have a nice day. <leaves>
    M: That's it Sharon, we're moving.

So later that day I gave my 2 week notice at work, and started job hunting for somewhere in a smaller town. Found one for just a small pay cut (and housing is cheaper, as well as the utilities, so it worked out to about the same disposable income) and moved up two weeks later and lived at a campground in a tent until my wife could arrage to sell the house, pack everything up, find a new place etc. Well, a year or two after we moved in to Yorkton, the crime rate started going up there too (no, no causual relationship honest!) so I found a place in a very small town (approx. 600 people) 20 miles from Yorkton and I've never been happier.

If for some unfathomable reason I was REQUIRED to stay in the same city I started in, I'm sure I would have taken some steps... gotten a dog, motion light in the alley, possibly a yard security system... I don't know. Staying was simply not an option for me.

Well, maybe one day when _your_ government comes into your house and decides that they would like to take your money and your computer that you used to type this message then you might feel different. The reason for the right to bear arms in the USA is to protect ourselves from the government. Its not a problem, its a right that you don't have. I would be scared shitless if I lived in the UK. Whats to stop the Queen from coming over and stealing your drapes that you work hard to buy just because she likes the color of them? Your country is more screwed up than the US dude. Cameras on every street corner? It cracks me up that George Orwell was so right, and you people let it happen anyway.

Also, I forgot to mention in my previous post. When the shit hits the fan here in the US (and it will very soon, look at the situation in the south from the hurricane) I will be prepared to defend my family and feed my family with my rifles. I won't starve and neither will my wife and kids. So if the problem is that firearms are legal in the USA then I guess its a problem that I want to feed my family if I am forced to hunt because society as we know it falls apart?
