Yeah, I used it just playing around with song ideas and it gave me a
'jumping off point' - but then used it to help me write some AppleScript -
I had to do some major tweaks to get it to work, but it saved me a ton
    of time!

My wife seems to think that AI is going to put a lot of people out of
work, I think it's going to impact some people, but those who adapt to
use tools like ChatGPT to make themselves more productive will be OK.

If I was a "digital nomad" making money by creating throwaway content
for the web being paid to sell ads, I'd be worried.

Otherwise, I'm hoping AI is like the advent of step-programmable
calculators, where people didn't have to do the grunt work of
mathematics and could do the imaginative stuff instead.

To be honest, I think that business model was an overgrown bubble ready to burst anyway.

Too much people is doing it, but the work itself is not very productive. You need a whole lot of traffic to make a meaningful profit.

Been playing with Github Copilot a bit on my personal system, and will say it definitely helps with boilerplate code. Like was (re)creating a schema script for PostgreSQL based on an existing SQL Server dump, and most of the many/many tables did a perfect job as soon as I named the table.

Ex: User table defined, Role table defined, UserRole table autocompleted with references. I also had several effectively enumeration tables, and the unique index on the natural keys autocompleted for most of the tables as well. It was definitely nifty cutting down on the typing. It's like auto-complete for coding, but supercharged.

That would be nice. But I remember CASE tools back in the 1990's. They were supposed to eliminate programmers. The business analysis entered the requirements in and the CASE tool spit out the code.

And we all know where CASE tools ended up.

So I'm not real concerned about AI right now. But, in general, you should always pay attention and if your job becomes something that a machine can do, it's time for a career change.

In the 1800's the laborers feared steam power and mechanical automation. A large pattern cutter could churn out parts, shift after shift, and one person could oversee several machines. Factory automation put fear in the minds of professionals and journeymen who could create every piece of a chair or
wagon. In the 1950's they began to fear a day when tabulation machines (aka electronic brains) would take away people's jobs.

Change and advancement in technology will always be viewed with skepticism
and uncertainty. A jobs are eliminated, new jobs appear. Graduates may be doing work that did not exist before they went to college.

Agreed. The #vanlife bubble seems to be bursting, lots of people decided

content creation a viable income stream for quite a few - when you don't

My concern is whether or not this generation coming out of college can

It'll vary by person, but (hopefully) this won't all change overnight.

Cutting-edge employers with six figure salaries for new grads are going to be a
trend-chasing rollercoaster as always, but there will be plenty of old-school shops
    that resist change.

And, of course, if you're going into a field because you're passionate about it (rare, I know),
then hopefully ChatGPT will be just another tool to learn and apply.

The big thing I worry about will be the people already a few years out of college, but not yet
experienced enough to have seniority. That was my position when COVID hit (not a new grad, no
new grad sympathy, but not experienced enough to be worth the not-new-grad paycheck). and it made
job finding an absolute bitch. If you're new enough to be disposable, but far enough out of
college to be behind the curve on AI, then you're going to have a very, very hard time.

The main thing is going to be how simple/mechanical/repeatable the action is.

Sort of like how "do arithmetic for eight hours a day" was replaced by Excel, but "Use the results of that arithmetic to write reports and suggestions, tailored to the complex blend of personalities that have a stake in it" has taken much longer to adequately automate.

places like amazon and johnson's wax (used robot trains for 30+years) use automated bots for moving product around. there's still people who have to operate the bots and take/work with the materials from them.

Over the years I worked an early shift where I'd print and distribute

I never had to clock out, and enjoyed being alone in the building

they can do that. but they arent used to do that. atleast to predict maint failures.

It wouldn't be hard to implement it. Machines have event logs and hour
meters, and another machine could poll or audit those machines and schedule maintenence and parts replacement. At one jobsite we had an HP storage area network. If a fan failed or gave a messagee that it was failing, it would
send a notice that it was failing and a fan would be sent to the site by couri er and an HP service tech would be notified to show up and replace it.

San Francisco has ridden the tech wave for decades, and it's made the
city less resilient. When so much of your tax base is from tech

can afford to live there, it changes a city.

You lose the families. You lose the artists. You lose the tradespeople,

I can't take credit for it - I had a calculus teacher in college who was enamored with programmable calculators as tools of freedom. He'd grown
up in a world where most computations were by hand, and he saw
calculators as a tool to free your mind. These were people who could
draw spreadsheets and recalculate them by hand.

We did all of our work with calculators. I had a cheap Casio FX-3600,
could program in something like 40 steps. Other people had HP-41
calculators that had a whole world of expansions, programs, and so on.

He inspired something in me where computers went from gadgets to tools.

Nice. I only had 1 college prof who liked computer (or computer-like devices).

It was a calculus class and we had to draw graphs of functions and calculate the roots. I had programmed my TRS-80 PC-4 (with only 512 bytes of RAM) do do the Newton-Raphson Technique of finding roots. He saw me using it on a test and quietly asked me about it. When I told him, he said, "cool" and walked away. I think he was impressed that a student actually USED something he taught in class.
