A while ago, I thought of trying to use ReactOS for that purpose, and I had set up a ReactOS VM, but it didn't seem to work quite as well as actual Windows.

I've been checking out reactos since the beginning. i just checked it out again, and again, i am not impressed.

I'm thinking this is just some way for these guys to get donations.
people get excited about it, but then they see that there's not much you can do with it.

This is exactly what I thought a decade ago - 'oh wow, this is cool - shelve it until its useable'... I install every year or two, until I write it off as never gonna happen - but hmmmm, I better go install it and see if its any better in 2o23...

I think that ReactOS may be like several others... it is someone's hobby
and, as such, it likely to take a lot of time and may never get anywhere.

I do feel like ReactOS development has been very slow. I first heard about ReactOS around 2006, and at the time, I heard ReactOS had started in the mid-90s, after Windows 95 was released (I think). So even then I was surprised they hadn't managed to release a stable feature-complete version yet. Even now, the current version is 0.4.14 - If their verison numbers mean anything, that still seems to imply an early version that isn't feature-complete or stable yet.
