Don't you guys find it pathetic that there's a fucking ballon floating
in the usa and the military says they can't get it?

We have no idea what's contained in the balloon :)

i'm sure they could image atleast 3 different ways.
also why can't they grapple it and bring it into a hanger.
or grapple it with a drone and fly it up even further.

fly up to 66,000 feet and try to grapple it. The air is a bit cool and thin

i don't have a hot air balloon. they have brought up a hot air balloon before at that altitude.

since it was manuverable maybe the chinese govt would just play with the joystick and avoid it.

That's because anybody that's part of the system knows that the chinese are ruthless. trump just didn't need to be silent because they don't own them.

    china does anything to win.
they became a manufacturing superpower and it was behind the back of regular people. politicians and everyone else kept silent.

If you destroy it right away, you cannot intercept and decode the

Open source doesn't mean *anyone* can make changes (e.g. adding bugs or intentional vulnerabilities) - but it does mean that *anyone* can thoroughly analyze the source code and report issues and even suggest fixes. --

And there are organizations of volunteers and researchers doing this constantly.

There will always be security vulnerabilities; security is transient.

my point is there's a false sense of security in open source software.
I think in the end, it's a wash. I think closed source and open source might be on the same level. Possibly, even closed source is safer.

There are entire conferences full of people that would disagree with you, but you do you ;)

Volunteers and researchers will change by volume the older a product gets and also depending on "new and cool" factor. After buying a Raspberry Pi, I
needed another single board computer and the Pine Rock64 fit the bill. When
it first came out in 2017-2018 there were loads of distros written for it. As time went by, several distros weren't being updated. Luckily Armbian kept updating their repositories. I ran into an video player issue afterupgrading to a newer image file, then learned the issue was related to the newer
kernal. I rolled back to the last image they made, then performed a distro upgrade without inheriting the problem.

    Probably having conferences.

Where were these people those 2 years that heartbleed was in the code and being exploited ;)

For every example of an open source vulnerability that went undetected for years, a cursory google search can give you an example of a closed-source vulnerability that went undetected for years, too.

For example, EternalBlue was a Windows exploit that the NSA knew about for at least 5 years. It existed as far back as Windows XP, and even caused Microsoft to release patches for those ancient, unsupported operating systems once it was publicly disclosed in 2017.

The problem with Windows and many closed source systems is that people still refuse to update them in a timely manner. The WannaCry ransomware attack was incredibly succesful because systems weren't patched.

Network devices often rely on closed source firmware, and they're notoriously difficult to update, as it requires shutting the network device down to reboot it, so people simply don't update it. There are probably a handful of Cisco routers out there that haven't been updated in 20+ years.

Most studies that have been done about security vulnerabilities have shown no appreciable difference between open source and closed source software. They're both affected by security flaws at the same rate.

But I would imaging that it is hard to hide the functionality
of "master key" in open-source code.

dude, opensource has been a security risk since it's been open
    source.

Years ago, I was looking for a job and I had a job interview at one company t trust because, since it's open-source, he thought anyone could go in and p e it works well and is secure.

    Nightfox

Windows has made great advances regarding locking it down. The last time I read about the pwn it to own competition, the hackers were going for
unpatched software exploits rather than exploits in the OS (regardless of platform.)

open source not safer than closed source if you look at the big picture. it's not safe if people don't do their part as contributers and members of t

Well said. In either system there are a core group of people doing product support. In closed source, you're assured a certain level of support because the developers on the project are assigned to the project. I n open source th e developers are there out of dedication, and may come and go depending on interest in the project.
