• What podcasts do you listen to

From Knightbbs@VERT/ENSEMBLE to All on Friday, April 16, 2021 00:54:23
Since we all share a passion of the retro side of technology I was wondering what podcasts you listen to.

The guilty pleasure that go me here is of course Jason Scotts podcast 'Jason Scott talks his way out of it'. But what other podcasts do you listen to as you peruse the BBS's (and what are they about).

I used to listen to BSD Now, Paul Security Weekly, Defensive Security and Linux Voice. That, for the IT front.

I also listened to HorseHour, The Libertarian and The Classicist. Sometimes I ran Fox New's 2 minute flash because it was always fun to hear how Obama was eating babies or whatever.

I listened to this stuff when doing barn work, mostly. I stopped doing it once I realized that listening to podcasts was distracting me from what really matters, this is, paying attention to the horses. I realized something was very wrong one day in which I was filling the water buckets, and a mare walked up to me and asked me for petting, and I pushed her asside and told her I was listening to a podcast. So freaking wrong a thing to do.

Although the've been around a long time, I've never realy bothered with podcasts until fairly recently. I have a Bluetooth speaker which I connect to my iPad so that I can increase the volume whenever I'd like to listen to something whilst in the shower or if I am preparing something to eat, etc... I mostly listen to the Joe Rogan Experience. His shows are so long that they eat up most of my podcasting time.

I started listening to podcasts in 2005 (in the very very early days) on my long communtes to work. I think that is what I miss the most about the covid era and working from home. I hated the long drives bu t I equally miss the hours of content I listened to. I learned so much by listening to podcasts + it was a nice way to deep dive into a certain topic.

Some of the podcasts I enjoyed

    Dan Carlins Hardcore History
    Cyberpunk Librarian
    Ubuntu Uk Podcast
    Jim Harolds Paranormal Podcast
    Going Linux
    Anything ghost.

Why would listening to a podcast preclude you from petting the
horses? If you're wearing the device, then it should be all the
more versatile and giving you the freedom of mobility.

Or.. why not just cast the audio to a bluetooth speaker if being
wired up to a device distracts you from the horses?

Growing up on the farm we sometimes played the radio through the
whole the barn while doing the morning chores.

I am a very focused person. If I am listening to a podcast which is not in my mother
language I am going to lack brainroom to do much else. Besides, earbuds and horses are
not compatible, because they will try to snatch them out of your ears for attention if
they feel you are not paying them any. In the end it means that you either pay attention to one thing or the other.

A bluetooth speaker sounds like a very expensive horse toy. I think I will stick to
    balls and plastic bottles, thanks!

Couldn't you keep the speaker out of reach from the horses?
Caste the audio from your portable device to it. Then, you can
listen to it free-form while you busy-yourself with the tasks in
    the barn.

That is an option, but I think it is more trouble than it is worth.

Maybe it is worth a try to see their reaction. They had a lot of fun with my cell phone after
I set a tone which consisted in horses going "neigh" for it :-P

I have a lot of fun teasing my cats with the "Cat Sounds" app on
my iPod from time to time. Apparently the sounds are so
realistic that the cats come running to investigate.

If you like retro gaming and tech, we've do a weekly podcast called The Retro Hour you might enjoy. We even had Jason Scott on at one point :-)

    It depends on the dog.

Mines figured out quite fast that the phone was no dog when I made it bark.

Actually, my horses figured out quite fast that the phone was no horse either when going neigh. Therefore
they started looking for the horse on the other side of the fence :-)
