Sorry about this , but i'm fairly new to BBS'ing and still learning the ropes. I see that in order to quote the previous message I can use the CTRL-Q keyboard combo, however that seems to be the same one as the one for disconnecting from the BBS (i get the 'would you like to disconnect'popup). Am I being a total noob here ?

Ctrl-Q????? I use /q to enter quote mode. Might want to try using a slash instead of the Ctrl key. May solve your problem.

There is a "Next in Thread" and "Previous in Thread" option.

I do most of my reading offline, otherwise I'd set up one of those threaded message readers on the board to make it easier for people to read online.
With telnet/SSH and multiple nodes, there's no real need for QWK, but the tools are nice to have.

i mean, if we're gonna sling around how we think the keyboard should work:

"-" has been previous message in Sync since the beginning. (use MultiMail instead! oh wait, "-" does the same thing in MultiMail that Sync does?? Fancy that..)

Ctrl-Page-Up has common behavior (upload file)

Ctrl-Page-Down has common behavior (start download)

Cursor Left and Cursor-Right are the most common Page-Up and Page-Down alternatives.

i'm sure there are dozens of other key bindings that are "just right" for you that i can attribute other common uses to on the BBS. including ones that are likely shared among a dozen BBS softwares..

i blame SlyEdit. but it's also significantly nicer than the other default one imo. so i use it anyways

i've mainly used qwk on boards that i really really dislike the user interface for. if it uses random punctuation for functions it probably drives me insane lol

Sync is great in this regard. not to totally insult the default menu set (sorry!) but if the new sysop removes all the menu sets but the default one (so i can't use the Renegade clone) i'm /O so fast.

i've been adding nets i like so i don't have to call some places.. but i do feel bad relegating boards to the "have ZOC remind me i haven't called in a while" list..

THAT is very nice! Then the original person who asked for extra
quoting so as to "remember" what a message was about could have
simply used the above commands to "find" the parent message.

The / commands are pretty universal to most full screen editors so that there is not issues with programs or operating systems that use the ctrl or alt key combination for other things.

SlyEdit and other message editors (such as DCT Edit and IceEdit) use Ctrl-Q to toggle quote mode. But as you said, /q can also be used to enter quote mode in SlyEdit.
