Better than you, it seems. At least nobody has stolen any of my computers.

I hope you were using full disk encryption.

That is usually the case :-)

My boss had a USB drive stolen once, and thankfully it was cryptsetupped to death. Which was a good thing because it was loaded up with critical information.

They also stole a folder. A paper folder. With no documents in. You really have to be desperate to steal those things.

Access format) and a few other key files with biz info..

    Man, that sucks.

I should have considered encrypting the whole drive for my
regular use. But never fully researched my options and how to
implement that. Meanwhile, I still carry around other usb
drives, but now I just stash them in my pockets.

You know, I am the paranoia man everybody laughs at.

Everybody laughs when I put the secret documents in a safe,
and when I get angry when somebody else does not.

I keep a few things like that in a location no one would ever
think to look. A safe is not practical for me; someone could
lift those suckers and carry it away.

Everybody laughs when I tell them no cameras, microphones or
phones are allowed near my computers or my stuff.

Pin cameras in pens, caps, eyeglasses, etc. would be hard to
    detect and notice. :/

Everybody laughs when I place my computers in a dhcpless
network, with both IPs and ARP statically configured and
host-to-host IPSEC encryption (to be honest, I laugh at this
    one myself too).

I understand static IP address (I've done that with the 2 pcs
and POS device that is connected to my network) but since I'm
the only person hanging around my network, I like the
convenience of dhcp when I need to fire up my Blackberry or
another laptop for a few minutes.

IPSEC eludes me. I think I encountered that for remote access.

Everybody laughs because I keep a checksum of every file in
storage, which is checked periodically for corruption or
    tampering.

Wow. I wouldn't laugh, but I think that must be a lot of
    checksumming going on.

Then somebody loses the secret documents, or gets them
stolen, or gets ransomware in a computer with no recovery
    options, and nobody fucking laughs.

The main vector for ransomware seems to be the meager email! If
I had persons working for me, I would ban the use of personal
email accounts. I wrote about a couple of recent email tricks
that landed on my plate in the fido INTERNET echo. One had the
links totally obvuscated with utf-8 chars. And another clearly
used the "X-PHP-Script:" header line with "<sitename>/mat/
metoo.php for 20.52.179.36" which you would only see if you
actually looked at the raw header data.

I have a nice collection of "I told you so" moments, and I
never go "I told you so" because, deep down, I am a good
guy. However, nobody ever realizes it was an "I told you so"
moment. A day later they are still laugthing at me.

Document those moments in writing and make a company poster out

$150 is way too much. My understanding is that you can build one your

I think your best bet would be Veracrypt. I don't know if it runs on XP but I think it
    should.

You could also use a USB drive with integrated hardware encryption, but I am not a fan
of those. They are very expensive for what they offer to regular consumers. Usually
they are also bound to specific versions of specific platforms.

Back in the day when interoperatibility with Windows was important, I used Veracrypt
myself (and its predecesor, Truecrypt). Truecrypt's manual is a MUST READ for any
security hobbyist, because it coves most opsec procedures you must be aware of when
dealing with nuclear launch codes XD

as a genuine storage device? It looks like it's intended to zap computers. But it doesn't look like it's a throwaway at $150 a
    piece.

Yup. That's its intent. It's completely malicious and designed to hurt
bad people who like to steal other people's USB drive.

i dont think usb drive thievery is big problem. this stuff is just made for people that want to be assholes and damage other people's stuff.

Even stock Synchronet can track threads, but I think it is good nettiquete to quote what you are responding to, if just to prevent people from having to backtrack and read the original post. Specially when the original post

Yes, I usually don't feel like tracking down the post that was being replied to. Quoting makes it so much easier to follow the
    conversation.

And for me, it's generally very inconvenient for me to backtrack. :/

You can always use a JAM-nntp server + a decent ng reader as a
go-to in your back pocket to view the message tree and do
    searches.
