From Blackdiamond@VERT/ABBBS to All on Saturday, January 23, 2021 17:21:44
So, someone started a thread about old iron, classic computers connecting to BBSs.

I figured, why not have some love for new iron? Who's using these systems on something fresh and modern?

I'm dialling in with Syncterm on a Win10 machine I bolted together for games and dev work. (Don't crucify me, I work with .NET)

    CPU: i7-8700K @ 3.70 GHz
    RAM: 32GB DDR4
    Boot Drive: 100GB SSD
    Mass Storage: 1TB SSD
    GPU: Nvidia GTX 1080
    MoBo: Z370M MORTAR (MS-7B54)

Who wants to throw their rig into the thunderdome?

The i7-8700K was only released just over 3 years ago, on October 5, 2017.. Overall, I think those specs aren't too bad, though the storage seems a bit low. Maybe the graphics card could be upgraded, but I think the 1080 is still fairly decent?

    Ooh, ouch, my feelings!

I'd say for my purposes, the system is still rocking along very, very nicely. Storage is a little tight but generally not an issue.

Performance is still stunning. Use this machine for software dev, for music production, for video production, and for gaming (1440p 144hz), all with no issues and 3 monitors.

Machine will run VR stuff very happily (Oculus CV1) and at top settings (no oversampling though).

I'd say it is starting to show its age a little bit but only in the GPU department. Can't run Cyberpunk 2077 at max settings, but who can?

The architectural improvements the RTX3000 series dishes out is just unreal, so I'm hoping to pick up a 3080, when they finally start appearing again. Chips are like hens teeth right now.

Still on old iron. I am typing on an Apple Macintosh from '84... funnily enough it's the Macintosh's 37th anniversary today!

It'll still do an admirable job of running most games at 1080p60 ultra.

Sorry, had a configuration issue, went to fix that, then copied my reply

Yeah let me know when you find one of those. I need one for mining... Or like, a dozen, but that's a little out of my league.
