From Tortillaretreat@VERT/CIAD to All on Monday, January 18, 2021 19:27:27
Does anyone know of any free alternatives to whitepages? I use it regularly to find out who calls me in the middle of the night(at least allegedly) speaking about my insurance expiring, but an address isn't enough to scare the shit out of the non-robots and I'm not about to pay for that. Any help is appreciated.

for that. Any help is appreciated.

if you look it up it will just say it's a cell carrier in that city and state. you cant really find out nowadays who calls you unless it's a real business.

I assume you're talking about a cellphone and not a landline?

I just do a Google search on the phone number.

I've taken the steps of anyone who calls me, but they aren't in my contact list,I don't answer the phone. If they are legitimate, they will leave a message.

In the past couple years or so, I've noticed if a phone number isn't in my contacts list, sometimes a caller ID will still appear on my phone with the person's name. Then if I add them to my contacts list, it will use whatever name I have in my contacts list for them.

Interesting. I won't pay for caller ID (too easy to spoof). Maybe that's
the difference. When I get a call from someone not in my contact list,
only a phone number displays for me.

I'm not paying extra for caller ID either. And it only happens for some phone numbers, not all.

That's even more interesting. I wonder if the scammer is sending out fake caller ID data with his phone call.
    I haven't seen this before.

It's not always scammers. I've had a couple real people I've talked to whose name has shown up on my phone's screen without them being in my contacts list.

With scammers, often just a phone number appears. It's possible for scammers to spoof a phone number though.

if you have an android phone google will scrape info and use it for caller id. i had a coworker who ran a side biz years earlier and she called me and it showed her business name.

There should be laws against Caller ID spoofing. I've lost track on how many calls I get a month asking me about my car warranty, windows, siding, changing insurance, homeownerships insurance, etc., etc. Most go to voice mail, but they'v gotten really good to spoof numbers really close to some of my doctors in Denver.

When I think about it now, I think one of the funniest scams was someone overseas who was spoofing the local police department's phone number calling me to tell me I actually owed taxes (even after I had filed my taxes and had paid what I owed), and tried to tell me they'd send police after me if I hung up. :P

A little over a year ago, my oldest daughter (foster, 26 years old) was giving birth to her third. I got a frantic call from my mother. "Brian, is Tyler okay?" Tyler, being my oldest son (19 at the time), is pretty much a homebody when he isn't working. I asked her why. Her response, "I just got a call from Tyler's friend saying that he was just arrested and needed money to be bailed out of jail. If I don't send money right away, Tyler will be kept in jail until his court date which is in one month." I asked my mother where he's locked up at. She responded, "Philadelphia." I said, "Mom, Tyler is at home playing video games. This is another scam. Please call the police department and inform them of the scam."

It happened a few more times.

    Then it stopped for good.

    Assholes.

Yes, write your congressman and insist on the death penalty for those convicted of spam/robo calls.
