Most people probably would wonder what the value of the
BBS is, seeing as th can't share pictures of their smashed
    avo breakfast or #IAmAnInfluencer.

Well, BBS does not look like the best place for building a
fanbase and all that stuff modern nettizens want.

I think Cory Doctorow's site, craphound.com, is well done.

It's blocky, icony, newsfeed friendly. It probably works well
on a large smartphone. Also note.. that every story has some
kind of graphic. Your stories should have something like that
too. An image gets the attention of the potential reader, and
creates a mood for the story.

Last week I was thinking I needed some strong social media
presence for promoting my short stories and such... Web
based social media has all these features that shoehorn
posts from third parties into people's news feed... BBS
don't really allow you to share comercial content you found
elsewhere and force it into your friends newsfeed in a
    convenient way without looking spammy.

A lot of authors have their own websites, so should you!

Personally, I really like the RSS option that some sites
support. It's a great way to get a heads-up on a new story or
    article without visiting the site.

Not sure how you would manage a commercial approach for your
stories on a BBS. Seems like there would be a lot of
duplication and extra work to keep a website current and a BBS
    current.

For users, that is a feature. For people who needs to
promote themselves, it is not much of an advantage.

To be honest, I am likely to skip social media for
promoting stories the same way I skip it for everything
else. Maybe I should try to Establish my brand here as an
    experiment?

Social media can still serve to get people at your doorstep.

Scripts. Perl. Sh. Everytime I update my website, the changes are replicated to my gopher site automatically via software cruft.

It can't be hard to integrate a mailer with my website that posts new entries to a BBS network each time the website is changed.

I don't really like that sort of automation because people will scream bloody spam when they start seeing automated messages such as those.
