    Hello poindexter!

Those were fun days, getting everything running. I remember wanting to
get one of those deals where you had 2 numbers on one line, and each
rang differently. You could use the fax software to only pick up the
calls on one of the lines.

That's exactly the way I ran my BBS in Montreal. I lived in an apartment
at that time. The 2nd pair of the POTS line was available, but I didn't
want the home-visit and spend the $100's "service fee" for installation.

But, the phone company had a distictive ring service which provided a new phone number (up to 4 numbers) and that number would have a unique ring pattern. Coupled with an Ident-a-Call box in-line, I could set it to only "hear" the call that I wanted. The BBS number/pattern was set to silent,
and the voice number would ring normally. The intercom system still interfered with a "live" phone call, but generally in the evenings or overnight when most of the BBS action occured, that wasn't too much of a problem.

The distinctive ring service was much cheaper at $5/mo than than a $30/mo separate line.
