• Scotch and Bourbon

From calcmandan@VERT/DIGDIST to All on Friday, July 03, 2020 20:05:00
Since there's a discussion on alcohol, does anyone drink scotch or bourbon?

My top scotch is an Islay variety called Lagavulin. Goes great with cigars.

Balvenie 21 year port wood, failing that the Caribbean cask. I like the Speysides since they don't taste like burnt straw and rasp on your throat. They're smooth and flavorful.

I don't drink much, because alcohol hits me like a ton of bricks, but when I do,
it is bourbon. Usually Quarter Horse Bourbon, because it has a horse on the label.

Yeah, bourbon, horses and firearms. I am that sort of dude.

I don't do cigars, and don't really like Scotch too much, although
I do have a few bottles of it around, including an unopened bottle
of Johnnie Walker Blue Label (fairly expensive), and a Macallan 18.

I do like bourbon, it's probably my main drink (when I do). I've
found that I don't really like the expensive stuff any better than
the cheap stuff, so it's mostly good old Jim Beam for me. I like
the JB Black better than the regular stuff.

We are making some bourbon drink for the 4th tomorrow; we just got Bulleit Orange Label, but my girl was bugging me to search for some local to Portland company. :P

Like bourbon, I kinda just stick with Bulleit as my goto... and yes, I think I've had plenty of scotch and bourbon while smoking a 'my father' in 2019...

Haven't delved too deep in the distilled spirits much. I should though,
since in the last 2 years 3 distilleries popped up within 7 miles of my
house. Round Barn has been around forever, then Lehman, Iron Shoe, and River St. Joe appeared on the scene. Round barn started with wine, then moved to making vodka, then over to beers. Lehman's already have vineyards and orchards, then jumped in wine, beer, and spirits all at once.

You don't know what you are missing.

Life is about taking a break from harvest work by sitting down near the barn and having a drink youth your horses. That is, you
have a drink while they caress your hair and beard with their teeth. That is what makes life worth living :-)

Yes. Mostly single malts, and cheap bourbon. Can't get into the
expensive bourbon trend, to me it's more of a cheap "on the rocks"
drink at dive bars with pool tables. In the very best way possible.

My top scotch is an Islay variety called Lagavulin. Goes great with cigars.

I've drunk Islay malts for years, been trying to break out to some of
the lowland scotches. Of all of the scotches I'd say that Lagavulin, Talisker, and Oban are my all-time favorites.

That does sound pretty cool, and I get your point completely. I
spent some time on a farm as a youth, but not too much since then.
What you describe above isn't possible for me now, being a
"suburbnanite"... I do still get out into the woods
semi-regularly, but not really on a working farm with animals.
