I don't think it is that. Some forums were quite usable on my older 700MHz machine, with a 56.6K dial up modem. Facebook is slow because it is so demanding on the web browser. On my laptop, which is old (its still 32bit), typing a message can be so slow, that text takes over 10 seconds to appear after its been typed.

Try using the mobile interface from your laptop/desktop..

I have not tried this in years but back when I was using an older Thinkpad
it was a real lifesaver as far as time goes.

It's great on older phones with less horsepower, too. I had a
16GB/2GB Android phone, and Facebook used to gobble up disk space.
I'd need to clean the cache out weekly to make space.

With the mobile site I could make an icon for it in Chrome and manage
    Chrome's memory use.
